A Narrative Inquiry into the Recreation Specialization Experiences of Pole Dance Participants

초록(요약문)

A Narrative Inquiry into the Recreation Specialization Experiences of Pole Dance Participants Kim, Dohee Major in Physical Education Graduate School of Education Sogang University This study aimed to explore in depth the recreation specialization process through which pole dance participants develop from general participants into highly specialized practitioners. As pole dance has rapidly gained popularity as both a sport and a leisure activity, the study sought to identify the stages and distinctive characteristics of specialization that emerge within the specific context of pole dance and to examine their similarities to and differences from existing theoretical models of recreation specialization. A narrative inquiry approach was employed. Using purposive sampling, six highly experienced female pole dance participants were selected. All participants resided in Seoul, had engaged in pole dance for at least three years, and had either obtained professional certification or participated in competitions. Data were collected primarily through in-depth interviews using semi-structured questions. To supplement the contextual understanding of the participants’ experiences, their social media activities were reviewed, and additional questions were conducted through mobile messaging. Following transcription, the data were inductively analyzed through processes of categorization and meaning construction. Member checking, expert consultation, and triangulation were employed to enhance the trustworthiness and ethical rigor of the study. The findings showed that the recreation specialization process of pole dance participants broadly followed the structural sequence of interest and entry, maintenance, transition experiences, activation, decline, and re-engagement. However, the distinctive characteristics of pole dance produced a unique and cyclical pattern of specialization. However, the distinctive characteristics of pole dance produced a unique and cyclical pattern of specialization. First, participants demonstrated a rapid, compressed form of specialization. Unlike many leisure activities in which specialization develops gradually over an extended period, the participants entered professional-level classes or certification programs within approximately one to six months of beginning pole dance. This accelerated progression was associated with the rapid expansion of the pole dance industry and the growing demand for instructors, which created a structure in which skill acquisition and transition into instructional roles occurred simultaneously during the early stages of participation. Second, participants experienced high-intensity transitions and actively transformed their leisure involvement into occupational roles. Performances, competitions, and professional certification served not merely as opportunities for deeper participation but as critical turning points that reshaped their life directions and career choices. Rather than entering the field solely for financial or practical reasons, participants positioned pole dance as a central element of their identities. Becoming instructors or developing pole dance-related brands functioned as an active strategy for sustaining their involvement within the pole dance ecosystem. Third, the specialization process was characterized by a cyclical pathway of decline and re-engagement. Although injuries, burnout, and occupational demands often led to temporary withdrawal, participants re-engaged through renewed identities and role adjustments, repeatedly returning to active involvement in pole dance. Because pole dance requires participants to perform movements against gravity, it entails substantial physical risks, including intense joint loading and falls. The pressure to achieve technically flawless performances also contributed to obsessive involvement, psychological burnout, decline, and temporary withdrawal. Nevertheless, the distinctive sense of physical competence gained by overcoming gravity, together with a deeply internalized pole dancer identity, served as a powerful motivation for returning. Through role adjustments—such as resuming work as studio directors or shifting into polewear-related businesses— participants repeatedly moved back toward renewed activation, forming a dynamic cyclical pathway of specialization. In conclusion, recreation specialization among pole dance participants was not limited to a linear increase in participation frequency or technical ability. Rather, it constituted a multidimensional and dynamic cyclical process through which participants actively reorganized their lives and sought sustainable pathways of involvement amid physical and environmental constraints. This study extends the applicability of recreation specialization theory to an emerging, female-centered sport and contributes to a deeper understanding of women’s self-directed engagement in sport and their pursuit of self-realization through leisure.
