초록 (요약문)
This study aimed to examine the levels of depression among adolescents who have experienced parental bereavement and to identify the protective factors that influence their psychological adjustment. Specifically, it investigated the relationships between self-esteem, positive parenting attitudes, and the quality of family relationships with adolescent depression, and analyzed whether the presence or absence of bereavement moderated these associations. Data was drawn from the 2021 National Youth Mental Health Survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute of Korea. A total of 210 adolescents participated, comprising 105 who had experienced parental bereavement and 105 matched peers without such experience, based on demographic characteristics. Group differences, correlations, and regression analyses were conducted to explore the key variables and potential moderating effects. The results indicated no significant differences between the bereaved and non-bereaved groups in depression, self-esteem, positive parenting attitudes, or family relationship quality. This suggests that parental bereavement does not uniformly lead to psychological maladjustment, and some adolescents may demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Additionally, self-esteem, positive parenting, and family relationship quality were all negatively correlated with depression, while the protective factors themselves were positively correlated. Both self-esteem and positive parenting attitudes significantly predicted lower levels of depression, but these relationships were not moderated by bereavement experience. However, bereavement did moderate the relationship between family relationship quality and depression, with the protective effect of family functioning on depression being weaker in the bereaved group. These findings suggest that interventions for bereaved adolescents should prioritize enhancing protective factors—such as self-esteem and supportive parenting—rather than focusing solely on the bereavement experience itself. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the need for an integrated approach that reflects the emotional structure and daily life context of families following bereavement. It can serve as foundational data for developing practical intervention strategies to support the emotional recovery of bereaved adolescents.
