우리는 생활 속에서 컴퓨터와 스마트폰과 같은 스마트 기기들을 기반으로 수많은 콘텐츠들을 통해 정보를 획득하고, 직접 정보를 생산할 수 있다. 또한 인터넷, 무선 네트워크와 같은 정보통신 관련기술이 발달하면서 보다 편리한 생활을 누리고 있다. 이러한 사회 변화에 따라 우리나라의 교육도 많은 변화가 있지만, 수학교과의 경우 학교 현장에서 뚜렷한 변화된 모습은 보기 힘들다. 우리나라의 교육과정에도 공학적 도구의 활용에 대해 언급하면서 공학적 도구의 사용에 대해 강조하고 있다. 공학적 도구의 사용에 대해 교육의 주체인 교사들이 이에 대해 긍정적으로 인식했을 때 실제로 이를 활용하여 교육하는 것이 가능할 것이고, 스마트교육도 충분히 가능할 것이다. 이러한 관점에서 연구를 진행하게 되었고, 다음과 같은 연구 문제를 제시하였다. 첫째, 수학 교과에서 스마트교육을 실시하는 것과 공학적 도구를 활용하는 것에 대해 고등학교 수학 교사들은 어떻게 인식하는가, 둘째, 수학의 기하 영역에서 탐구형 기하 소프트웨어를 활용하는 것에 대해 고등학교 수학 교사들은 어떻게 인식하는가, 셋째, 고등학교 수학 교사들이 기하 영역에서 탐구형 기하 소프트웨어를 실제로 활용하는 것은 어떠한가이다. 고등학교 수학교사들은 수학교과에서 스마트교육을 실시하는 것과 공학적 도구를 활용하는 것, 기하 영역에서 탐구형 기하 소프트웨어를 이용하는 것에 대해 모두 긍정적으로 인식하고 있었다. 고등학교 수학교사들은 스마트교육이 유용하고 스마트기기를 이용하여 스마트교육을 해야 할 필요성을 느끼고 있었다. 공학적 도구를 활용하는 것은 학생들의 학습동기 유발과 개념을 이해할 수 있다는 점에서 학습효과가 가장 높을 것으로 생각하고, 수학에 보다 흥미를 가지게 되는 등 대체적으로 수업에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 것으로 인식하고 있었다. 기하영역에서 탐구형 기하 소프트웨어를 수업에 활용하는 것은 학생들의 학습동기를 유발하고 개념을 이해하는 데 많은 도움이 되며, 다양한 시각적 경험을 제공할 수 있다는 점에 긍정적으로 인식하였다. 하지만 긍정적인 교사들의 인식과는 달리 실제 수학교과에 스마트교육을 실시하는 것과 공학적 도구를 활용하는 것, 탐구형 기하 소프트웨어를 활용하는 것은 많지 않았다. 그리고 공학적 도구, 탐구형 기하 소프트웨어들이 수학교과에서 실제로 많이 이용되지 못하는 것도 스마트교육이 실시되지 못하는 이유와 같은 맥락에서 생각하고 있었다. 수학교과에서 스마트교육을 실시하는 것과 공학적 도구를 활용하는 교육, 기하 영역에서 탐구형 기하 소프트웨어를 활용하는 교육들에 대한 고등학교 수학교사들의 긍정적인 인식이 바탕이 되었을 때 수학교과에서 스마트교육을 제대로 실시될 것이다.
