Hong Yang-ho’s Intentions in Writing Choe Pil-gong-jeon : An Aspect of the Perception of Apostasy from Catholicism in Late Joseon

This study aims to clarify the authorial intentions of Hong Yang-ho(洪良浩, 1724–1802) in writing Choe Pil-gong-jeon(崔必恭傳), a biographical account composed at the order of King Jeongjo(正祖, r. 1776–1800). Choe Pil-gong-jeon depicts the process by which the Catholic convert Choe Pil-gong(崔必恭, 1744–1801) renounced his faith and accepted the moral transformation promoted by King Jeongjo. The work was created to publicize the success of Jeongjo's policy of converting Catholics back to orthodoxy. However, when Choe Pil-gong was executed in 1801 during the Sinyu Persecution—after Jeongjo's death—on charges of having re-embraced Catholicism, Hong Yang-ho added a passage to the preface of the already-completed biography acknowledging that Choe's reformation had in fact failed. This addition, placed at the opening of a work meant to celebrate the success of royal moral suasion, amounts to the author's own admission that the very transformation the text was written to promote had failed—a gesture that carries significance beyond that of a simple after-the-fact record. Whereas previous scholarship has generally characterized Choe Pil-gong-jeon as political propaganda promoting the achievements of Jeongjo's reformation policy, paying little attention to Hong Yang-ho's own intentions, this study closely compares the actual life of Choe Pil-gong with his portrayal in the text in order to identify the intentions behind, and motivations for, Hong's later interpolations. The analysis shows that while Hong shortened the duration of Choe's reformation and omitted the continued surveillance Jeongjo maintained over him after his apostasy—both changes that highlight the king's transformative authority—he simultaneously downplayed passages describing Jeongjo's concrete acts of grace, and devoted roughly one-third of the text to an abstract historian's eulogy(史臣贊). This restrained narrative strategy, which fulfills only the minimal formal requirements of a royally commissioned text, suggests that Hong did not fully commit himself to the work—a stance consistent with the administrative friction he was experiencing with Jeongjo at the time, while serving as governor of Pyeongan Province. Underlying this attitude was Hong Yang-ho's consistently negative view of Catholicism, which he regarded as a heterodox teaching(邪敎). Through his exchanges with Ji Yun(紀昀) and Yi Heon-gyeong(李獻慶), Hong shared critical views of Catholicism, suggesting that he did not fully endorse Jeongjo's reformation policy. The later interpolation made after Jeongjo's death can thus be read both as an expression of this underlying critical stance and as a defensive measure prompted by changing political circumstances. Under Jeongjo, Choe Pil-gong's compromise-based apostasy—in which he professed loyalty to the king while still invoking Catholic doctrine—could be tolerated; however, once the suppression of Catholicism intensified under King Sunjo, such an apostasy was no longer recognized as complete. By retroactively specifying in the preface that Choe's renunciation had been incomplete, Hong Yang-ho sought to forestall the political misunderstanding that his biography had been an apologia for heterodox learning(邪學). This study offers two contributions to the field. First, it identifies a shift in the perception of apostasy between the reigns of Jeongjo and Sunjo. Under Jeongjo, a doctrinally compromised form of apostasy was accepted, allowing Choe Pil-gong's reformation to be publicized through the court gazette(朝報); but as standards grew stricter under Sunjo, his earlier statements of apostasy could no longer be recognized as valid. Hong Yang-ho's interpolation represents an attempt to bridge this temporal gap and secure legitimacy for his own authorship. Second, this study reveals a distinctive aspect of Choe Pil-gong that sets him apart from typical apostates. Unlike most who renounced their faith, Choe Pil-gong invoked Catholic doctrine itself to acknowledge that his actions contradicted that doctrine, while praising the grace of the former king all the more highly. This represents a unique pattern of apostasy grounded in Catholic doctrine, demonstrating that the range of ways apostasy was understood under Jeongjo was considerably more diverse than previously recognized.
