This thesis examines the function of liminal space in Jonathan Safran Foer‟s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close （2005） as a structural response to trauma, reading the novel through Victor Turner‟s concept of liminality and its extension into spatial forms as theorized by Björn Thomassen. Rather than treating liminality as a transitory condition to be overcome, this thesis argues that Foer‟s novel constructs liminal space as a habitable ground for characters whom trauma has expelled from ordinary spatial and social belonging. Chapter One examines how the grandparents‟ trauma of the Dresden bombings is spatially mediated through liminal sites—the airport, the threshold of the doorknob photographs—arguing that these spaces enable a form of coexistence with grief that their home could not provide. Chapter Two turns to Oskar Schell, analyzing how his scrapbook, Stuff That Happened To Me, constructs a liminal reading position for the reader. Together, the two chapters argue that liminality in Foer‟s novel operates simultaneously at the level of space and literary form. Ultimately, my thesis concludes that this layered liminality suggests the possibility of communitas: a shared threshold experience that binds the traumatized text to its reader.
