(The Rape of the Lock)이 벨린다(Belinda)의 허영을 조롱하는 가벼운 풍자가 아니라, 여성의 몸과 비인간 존재들이 이루고 있던 관계적 질서가 인간의 소유와 지배 욕망에 의해 끊어지고 다시 배치되는 과정을 보여준다고 주장한다. 이러한 해석을 위해, 본 논문은 포프의 존재의 사슬(Great Chain of Being)과 사랑의 사슬(Chain of Love)을 통해 벨린다가 실프(the sylphs), 사물, 자연적 요소와 함께 움직이는 관계적 질서 안에 놓여 있음을 밝힌다.

This thesis argues that Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock represents the severing of a relational order formed around Belinda’s body and nonhuman beings. Critics have read the cutting of Belinda’s lock as an instance of the poem’s formal complexity, the control of the female body, or Pope’s satire on Belinda. However, Pope criticizes the pride of the human subject who places himself at the center of the world and believes that other beings can be used for his own purposes. In The Rape of the Lock, this pride takes shape in the Baron’s attempt to possess Belinda’s lock. The thesis applies Pope’s Great Chain of Being and Chain of Love to show that Belinda is a figure placed within a relational order that moves with the sylphs, material objects, and natural elements around her. Continuing this discussion of relation and possession, the thesis draws on Val Plumwood’s ecological feminism to show how the Baron’s act turns Pope’s critique of pride into a problem of gender domination, as his cutting separates the lock from Belinda’s body, while Umbriel and Clarissa continue this domination by absorbing her loss into general images of female emotion and proper conduct. Lastly, the thesis interprets the lock’s ascent into the sky and its new relation with the sylphs as an ending in which the lock escapes both Belinda’s recovery and the Baron’s possession, showing that this poem ultimately criticizes not Belinda’s vanity, but the pride and logic of domination.
