This thesis reads Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness （1899） through Achille Mbembe’s theory of brutalism to argue that the novella formally anticipates the contemporary extinction crisis by revealing late nineteenth-century extraction capitalism as its precursor. Extending Mbembe’s framework to the nineteenth-century context of Darwinism and colonial extraction, I coin the term brutalist eschatology to refer to the attritional temporal structure of human extinction through extraction capitalism. Through metonymic association, the novella formalizes the structure of extraction capitalism, which systematically depletes populations by reducing them to extractable matter; through Kurtz’s transformation into ivory within that structure, the exhaustion in the colony ultimately prefigures European extinction. The thesis then examines the novella’s form as a futureless narrative, in which Marlow strenuously narrates despite his awareness of the hollowness at his narrative destination. The text formally illuminates inertial subjectivity: an orientation toward meaning that persists in the futureless world. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates that the absence of alternative visions in Heart of Darkness shows Conrad’s diagnostic precision about being inside extinction—a form of experiential knowledge particularly relevant to today’s climate crisis.
