FROM NEWSFEEDS TO MINDSETS: THE IMPACT OF THE MEDIA ON SOUTH KOREAN ATTITUDES TOWARD OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS

초록 (요약문)

The stories of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in South Korea reflect not only the aspirations of migrant communities but also the complexities of navigating cultural differences in an increasingly globalized society. Economic concerns, national identity, and media narratives all play a critical role in shaping public attitudes toward OFWs. While prior research has examined general perceptions of migrants and foreign workers, it often overlooks the specific impact of media framing on these views. This study addresses that gap by investigating how media representations influence public sentiment toward OFWs in South Korea, particularly through the lens of Intergroup Contact Theory and Framing Theory. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, the research utilizes a survey experiment involving two contrasting media articles—one framed favorably and the other critically—to assess shifts in perception. It also incorporates a case study of the South Korea–Philippines Caregiver Pilot Program, drawing on a written interview with the Migrant Workers Office of the Philippine Embassy in Seoul. The findings reveal modest but meaningful differences between the two groups, indicating that while media portrayals do influence public attitudes, their impact is moderated by deeper structural conditions such as social hierarchies and limited institutional support. These insights underscore the importance of targeted policy measures and public discourse that promote multicultural inclusion, contributing valuable perspectives to both migration scholarship and ongoing debates around diversity in South Korea.
