A Study on Determinants of Double-Majoring and the Effects of Double-Majoring on Career Path: Focusing on S University in Seoul, Korea

This study aims to investigate the determinants of double-majoring and the effects of double-majoring on career path. To do so, I combined and analyzed the individual students information retrieved from academic information ERP system in S University in Seoul, Korea and their subsequent career information that are originally prepared for the information service of Higher Education. Specifically, I raised and answered the following research questions. First, what are the determinants of double-majoring? Second, does a double-majoring lead to any meaningful difference in CGPA? Third, do a double-majoring and the choice of majors have any impact on the employment upon the graduation and career choice? Finally, what are the effects of individual characteristics of undergraduate students and a double-majoring on the employment upon the graduation and career choice? I found the following results. First, the type of Faculty a student is originally enrolled in, gender, CGPA when applying for double major, the type of high school the student graduated, and the year of admission to the university were found to be determinants of double-majoring. Among these determinants, the type of Faculty was most significantly associated with double-majoring and I found that students in the Faculty of Humanities are most likely to pursue double-majoring. Second, there was a statistical difference in CGPA between students with a double major and those without it but the difference was only 0.03. Third, I found that a double-majoring made a difference when it comes to the employment upon the graduation. More specifically, I found that students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science (Engineering) are more (less) likely to secure the employment if they have double majors. I also found that students in general are more likely to pursue industry career (instead of academic career) if they have double majors, but students in the Faculty of Commerce are more likely to pursue industry career when they have single major. When it comes to choice of majors for double-majoring, I found that students having business major as the second major have a greater chance of employment upon the graduation and they are more likely to pursue industry career. Finally, the logistic regression analysis led me to identify the following determinants. Factors that had impact on both the employment upon the graduation and career choice (industry vs. academic) were the type of Faculty a student is originally enrolled in, gender, the type of high school the student graduated (more specifically, whether the student graduated from the special-purpose high school or not), and CGPA upon the graduation. CGPA when applying for double major, the type of high school a student graduated (more specifically, whether the student graduated from the specialized high school or not), and whether to have double majors or not had impact on career choice only.
