Bio-based PETG(glycol modified polyethylene terephthalate)/clay nanocomposites were prepared using water with twin screw extruder. In process, PETG and clay were melt-mixed in three different ways: without water, with water and clay separately and with water-clay slurry state. The effects of three processing methods and three clay types on PETG/clay nanocomposites were investigated by measuring their rheological, mechanical and barrier properties. Slurry process was found to be the best efficient method in dispersing clays. This was confirmed by both TEM and XRD showing exfoliated clay in PETG matrix for PETG/clay nanocomposites. Improved mechanical and barrier properties were also observed with Cloisite 30B-water slurry process, while PETG/Cloisite Na+ nanocomposites showed different trend by the compatibility with polymer matrix.
