This paper presents design, fabrication process, and the experimental results of an artificial hair sensor made of polymer materials. The all polymer artificial hair cell array can obtain 2-axis deflection of hair structure using carbon nano-tube (CNT )-impregnated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS ) piezoresistive material. Long polymer hair structures were formed on flexible substrate and flexible three dimensional piezoresistive sensors were embedded in each hair cell to detect applied force. The flexible piezoresistorere implemented using CNT-PDMS composite prepared by mixing multi-wall carbon nanotubes with PDMS. The conductivity and gauge factor was highly depending on the concentration of CNTs. We could obtain a CNT-PDMS composite with high conductivity and high gauge factor by increasing the CNT concentration in PDMS. In this paper, we have used 13% CNT-PDMS composite for sensor element. The hair sensor was 4mm tall and 700 μm in diameter. The height of CNT-PDMS sensing structure was 240 μm. On-axis, the device shows very linear and sensitive response with sensitivity of 101 Ω/μm. This on-axis sensitivity is higher than the off-axis sensitivity with sensitivity of 30 Ω/μm.
