본고에서는 <아랑 전설>을 소설화하고 있는 김영하의 중편소설「아랑은 왜 나비가 되었나」와 동일 작가의 장편 소설『아랑은 왜』를 연구 대상으로 삼아, <아랑 전설>의 소설화를 연구하였다. 소설은 화자가 어떤 이야기를 누군가에게 전달하는 양식의 문학이다. 김영하 소설 두 편에 대한 서술 기법상의 논의는 다양하게 이루어져 왔으나 소설 작품의 내적 연구는 활발하지 않다고 판단하여, 여기서는 서술 방식보다는 소설의 내용에 해당하는 이야기 자체에 관심을 가지고 논의를 전개하고자 하였다. 2장에서는 <아랑 전설>이라는 이야기가 어떤 식으로 소설화 되었는지 두 편의 작품 각각에서 이야기 구성 요소인 인물, 플롯, 환경의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 3장에서는 작가가 여러 설화 중에서 굳이 <아랑 전설>을 선택하여 소설화했는지 알아보기 위해 생소재로서 <아랑 전설>이 가지는 개방성에 대해 알아보고, 전설을 소설화하면서 드러나는 작가의식의 변모에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 작가는 전설의 소설화를 통해 이미 알고 있는 이야기의 새로운 발견을 모색하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 두 편의 소설이 <아랑 전설>을 어떤 식으로 수용하여 오늘의 상황에 맞는 이야기를 전개하고 있는지도 알 수 있었다. 두 편의 소설은 <아랑 전설>의 각편에서 보이는 다양한 ‘틈’을 이용하여 만들어진 새로운 현대판 아랑 전설이며, 작가의 이러한 시도는 소설을 통해 전설을 전승하려는 시도라고 생각한다.

This study examined Kim Young-ha''s two novels titled ''Why A-rang transformed herself into a butterfly'' and ''A-rang, Why did she…''. Both novels were modeled on ''The Legend of A-rang'', so this study went over how this legend was developed to modern novels. The novel is a literary genre in which a narrator tells a story to a narratee. There have been animated discussions on the narrative style of these two novels, but the story itself didn''t seem to be focused on. Therefore, this study was aimed to discuss on what these novels tell us. In chapter II, how ''The Legend of A-rang'' was transformed into two novels in terms of their characters, plot, and setting was examined. Chapter III goes over to identify the reason why the writer chose ''The Legend of A-rang'' and "openness" that this legend has. Also here was found the change in the writer''s awareness of life and art. The result of analysis have shown that the writer has been searching for a discovery from the well-known folklore. Also, the fact that these two novels were based on the old folklore but adapted to the trend of modern society was found. To conclude, these two novels are modern versions of ''The Legend of A-rang'', which were developed from "room" for the further development. Moreover, such a discerning eye seems an attempt to hand down the folklore to the new generation by way of novels.
