The use of articles is one of the most difficult problems in teaching English as a foreign language. It has been reported that most nonnative speakers of English have difficulty understanding the exact usage of English articles. The purpose of this study is to analyze student''s errors in using articles in English and to offer some materials for more practical teaching methods of English article usage. A close test and a controlled English composition were employed for this study. The results and findings of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the accuracy level of article usage was generally low. Furthermore, these results illustrate that most addition errors are followed by omission and substitution errors in the cloze test, while most omission errors are followed by substitution and addition errors in the controlled composition. And the accuracy in use of the indefinite article is higher than that of the definite article in both tests. Secondly, native language and target language effects on the use of articles by various strategies like overgeneralization and transfer, interference from the mother tongue. Overgeneralization seems to result from an excessive emphasis on grammatical structure in the target language. And transfer produces errors when features of the target language are incompatible with those of the mother tongue. Accordingly, we suggest that articles should be treated within the framework of discourse and thereby make learners aware of the roles and functions of articles in the contexts in which they are used. In addition, teachers should let their students acknowledge that articles play an important role in conversation, and should help them internalize the article system for themselves by consciousness raising or reconstructing activities. It is also required that teacher should teach them to acquire an accurate usage of articles by analyzing frequent errors through free writing composition.
