멀티미디어를 활용한 영어 읽기 학습 : A Study on English Reading Education Using Multimedia

초록/요약

이 연구는 영어 읽기교육에 교과서와 같은 경직 된 언어 형태가 아니라 문자, 그림, 사진, 애니메이션, 음성, 동영상과 같은 멀티미디어 매체를 도입함으로서 학습자의 학습에 대한 불안감이나 긴장감을 줄여주고 학습자들에게 다양하고 실제적이며, 학습자가 영어 학습에 주된 역할을 할 수 있는 환경을 제공해주자는 데 그 목적이 있다. 멀티미디어를 활용한 영어읽기 교육은 의사소통 능력을 배양하고 문화적인 이해를 진작시키며 영어 읽기 학습에 대한 동기를 강화시켜주는 역할을 할 수 있다. 또한 의사소통 중심의 교수요목에 따른 다양한 주제들은 흥미 있는 방법들을 제시하고 원어민의 즉각적인 음성지원과 피드백은 의사소통 능력의 향상에 효과적인 학습을 가능하게 해준다. 우리나라와 같은 EFL(English as a Foreign Language) 환경에서 멀티미디어 매체를 활용한 영어 읽기 교육은 불가분의 관계이다. CD-ROM을 이용한 영어교육은 학습의 속도를 조절할 수 있어 학습자의 학습에 대한 불안감과 긴장감을 감소시켜 학습 집중력을 높여주고 인터넷을 이용한 영어 교육은 학습자들에게 가장 최신의 학습 자료에 즉각적이고 편안하게 접근 할 수 있게 하고, 학습자들에게 그들의 관심, 바램, 수준에 따라 자율 학습이 가능케 한다. 인터넷 사이트를 이용한 읽기 자료의 사용은 자료 탐색 능력을 향상 시키고 학생들의 수준을 고려함과 동시에 학습자의 영어 읽기 학습에 대한 관심 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 끼친다. 이 논문은 세 부분으로 구성되어 있다, 제일 먼저 학습 매체로서의 멀티미디어의 활용 가능성과 읽기 모형을 이용한 영어 읽기 교육의 효율성을 제시하고 있고, 두 번째로 멀티미디어를 이용한 읽기 전략과 읽기 활동 과업, 학습의 단계와 방법을 연구하였으며, 마지막으로 영어 읽기 교육에 이용하는 CD-ROM과 중ㆍ고등학생을 위한 인터넷 읽기 사이트를 분석했다. 결론적으로 이러한 수많은 장점을 가지고 있는 멀티미디어를 통한 성공적인 영어 읽기 교육을 위해서 교사들은 학습자들의 수준에 맞고 교육적이면서 흥미를 유발시킬 수 있는 자료를 찾고 개발하는데 더욱 심혈을 기울여야 하겠다.

The education environment is changing especially with rapid development of IT technology. People are changing their points of view about education in general, the role of teachers and students, and curriculums. Computers and IT technology education infra are ready to be used at schools as a result of the fact that computers have become indispensable part of our everyday life and a growing interest in using computers in education. English is getting more and more important as the globalization of the World deepens. The ability to use English is required more than ever. The importance of reading should be emphasized in these changes. Apart from the fact that reading in English still plays an important part in the University entrance examination, it is also important to increase the reading ability of students in English to understand and select what they need when they meet a lot of information in English through the internet. The paradigm of education is also changing. The constructivist’s point of view focusing on increasing ability to use information creatively by constructing knowledge through collecting information, choosing what they need and restructuring activities by students themselves is considered to be more effective compared to the conventional cramming education. The 7th School Curriculum newly announced by the Government also shows it is changing paradigm of education. It requires IT technology to be used at certain levels in every curriculum and emphasizes the improvement of communication ability and individual self-motivated study considering the difference of students’ ability. However there are still 35-45 students in a class and it is very difficult for a teacher to consider the difference of each student in their levels and interests. As a result teachers are not able to provoke students’ interests, which would lead to the motivation of students that can increase efficiency of study. Efficient education is difficult to be expected to be done in the circumstance of overcrowded class especially with previous uniform teaching materials. To solve this problem, multimedia computers and study programs can be used. It is very important to use multimedia in teaching reading English in an EFL(English as a Foreign Language) context like Korea. Teaching English using CD-ROM can increase concentration of study by enabling to control the pace of study and decreasing the students’ anxiety and tension of students about studying. Using the internet in teaching English also enables students immediate and easy access to the most up-dated study materials and to choose how and what to study according to their interests, hopes, and levels. Using reading materials in internet web sites enhances material searching ability and gives positive effects in increasing interests in studying reading English as well as considering levels of students. Therefore it can be argued that teaching English using multimedia is very effective. Teaching reading English with multimedia has the following advantages. (1) The uneasiness students feel about English can be reduced by using computers that are very familiar to most students. (2) Various reading materials like current issues in addition to textbooks can be provided to students. (3) Reading materials appropriate to ability of students for reading can be provided to students as the 7th. School Curriculum emphasizes. (4) Students can easily meet various kinds of information such as geography, history, society, and culture which are very important in learning a foreign language indirectly. (5) Immediate voice support program and feedbacks from native speakers enable more effective study. In conclusion, using multimedia in teaching reading English enhances study efficiency by giving positive effects to students. It can provoke interest in the class, help them participate in the class and remember what they have studied in the class longer. Multimedia can also enhance communication ability, cultural apprehension, and motivation to study English. Therefore teachers should try to find and develop materials that are more interesting, educational and suitable for each student in their level for more successful teaching of English reading through multimedia. This thesis has their three parts. Firstly, the possibility of using multimedia as study methods and their effectiveness of teaching English reading using reading matrix is presented. Secondly, reading strategies, reading activity tasks and teaching steps and methods are studied. Thirdly, CD-ROM and internet reading web sites for middle and high school students are analyzed. This thesis considered (1) why multimedia is necessary in teaching English reading, (2) the effectiveness of various materials in internet web sites for teaching English reading (3) what kind of advantages teaching English reading based on multimedia materials have (4) what kind of reading strategies and steps should be gone through (5) which internet web sites are useful for studying English reading.
