In the late nineteenth century, Americans experienced lively corporations and powerful capitalism which produced immense wealth and inequality pervading the cities. In material prosperity, individuals and society were divided in that private profit came before public welfare. It generated the new individual constituted by possessions. In this social background, Dreiser’s Sister Carrie is best known as a representative naturalist novel. General views on naturalist novels give a pessimistic impression in which the characters seem to have no free will and no moral in their fate. In the novel, although the characters may be helpless in their fate in the amoral world, Dreiser never makes them stop seeking a valuable life. He observes their life under Herbert Spencer’s evolutionary optimism in which the human life is evolving from primitive society to complex society and, in the process, it operates toward something better. Furthermore, like the capitalist society, the new individual through possessions proceeds into common good in a prosperous society. In ChapterⅠ, I will examine the characteristics of Dreiser’s capitalist society in the novel, that is, different aspects of capitalism. While recognizing unfavorable conditions such as the relativity of poverty and wealth in consumerism and miserable working circumstances of the lower classes, he underlines affirmative effects of capitalism and tries to modify its depressing effects for a better society. I will explore how Dreiser harmonizes the negative causes of the capitalism with a new vision of a prosperous society. In Chapter Ⅱ, I will concentrate on how Dreiser establishes Carrie’s individualism in a capitalist society. She finds her identity within the materialistic individualism in a consumer culture in which she pursues wealth and luxury not as a hedonist but as an active agent. She displays self-centered features leading to her independence; she develops her desire towards more elegant objects and a more sensible self. In addition, Dreiser justifies Carrie against critics of her morality while mentioning her unavoidable circumstances such as impersonal relations. He intends to reveal the possibility of a new vision in capitalist society with Carrie. When she perceives that her identity is not preserved in social discord, her individualism begins to develop from an emphasis on liberty to self-realization in public interest. Carrie becomes an ideal character with her experience in a capitalist society in which economic prosperity coexists with poverty.

미국은 19세기 후반부에 도시를 중심으로 만연 되어있는 활기찬 기업들과 강력한 자본주의를 경험한다. 물질의 풍요 속에서 개인의 이익이 공익보다 우선하게 되면서 개인들과 사회는 분열된다. 그로 인해 소유를 강조하는 새로운 개인주의가 등장한다. 이러한 사회적 배경에서, 드라이저의『씨스터 캐리』는 대표적인 자연주의 소설로 알려져 있다. 자연주의적인 소설이 갖는 일반적 견해에 따라 『씨스터 캐리』의 작중인물들은 자신의 운명에 대해 자유의지가 없고 도덕도 없다는 비관적인 인상을 주기 쉽다. 그러나 비록 작중인물들은 도덕이 부재한 세상에서 자신의 운명 앞에 힘 없는 존재이지만, 드라이저는 이 소설에서 그들이 가치 있는 삶을 계속 추구하는데 있어 부단한 노력을 기울이는 모습을 보여 주고자 한다. 드라이저는 인간의 삶은 원시적 사회에서 다양하고 복잡한 사회로 변화하고 그 과정은 보다 발전된 모습을 향해 작용한다는 허버트 스펜서의 낙관적인 진화론 아래에서 등장인물들을 관찰한다. 더 나아가, 자본주의 사회에서와 마찬가지로 등장인물들은 새로운 풍요로운 사회환경에서 소비를 강조하지만 미래의 공동의 이익을 향해 전진한다. 첫 장에서는 드라이저가 『씨스터 캐리』에서 나타내고자 하는 자본주의 사회의 다양한 양상들을 알아보고자 한다. 한편으로 소비주의에서의 빈부의 극심한 상대적 격차와 노동자계급의 비참한 노동 조건들을 현실에 비추어 객관적으로 묘사하지만, 드라이저는 자본주의 사회의 긍정적인 효과를 강조하면서 보다 나은 사회를 위해 변화하는 모습을 보여준다. 자본주의 사회의 새로운 경향 속에서 작가가 의도한 사회의 새로운 비전이 어떻게 자본주의의 부정적인 요소들과 결합되는지 알아 보고자 한다. 둘째 장에서는 드라이저가 주인공인 캐리를 통해 자본주의 사회에서 강조하고자 하는 개인주의의 모습을 분석 하고자 한다. 캐리는 쾌락주의자로서가 아니라 적극적인 행위자로서 부와 화려함을 추구하는 소비문화에서 물질주의에 기초한 개인주의를 보여준다. 또한 그녀는 자기 중심적인 특징을 갖고 독립적인 존재가 되며, 그녀의 욕망은 더 나은 물건을 소유하고 더 발전된 자신을 만들기 위해 발휘된다. 그 위에 드라이저는 비인간적 인간관계와 같은 어쩔 수 없는 환경을 보여주면서 그녀의 도덕적 결함에 대한 비판들을 잠재우면서 주인공 캐리를 통해 자본주의 사회에서의 새로운 비전의 가능성을 보여준다. 캐리는 그녀의 정체성이 사회의 불화 속에서 유지될 수 없다는 것을 지각하게 되었을 때, 자신의 자유를 제일로 생각하던 개인주의적 인물에서 소외된 사람들과 공동의 이익을 공유하는, 보다 성숙된 개인주의자로 변화한다. 경제적 풍요와 가난이 공존하는 자본주의 사회 속에서 캐리가 그녀의 경험 등을 통해 어떻게 이상적인 인물로 부각되는지 조명하고자 한다.
