초록(요약문)
본 연구는 지정학적 갈등이 외국기업의 특허 출원 전략에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 기존 연구는 지정학적 갈등에 따른 거시적 변화에 집중하였으나, 본 연구는 영토성을 바탕으로 기술 공개가 요구되는 특허의 특성에 주목하여 특허 제도의 불확실성 증가에 따른 기업의 특허 출원 전략을 보고자 하였다. 2008~2025 년 미국 하드웨어 스타트업 124 개사가 중국에 출원한 특허 2,458 건을 활용하여 2018 년 이후 지정학적 긴장을 외생적 충격으로 설정한 패널 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 지정학적 갈등 이후 외국 기업은 핵심 기술의 고품질의 특허 출원을 줄이며 기술 공개 수준을 낮추는 전략 변화를 보였다. 또한 본국 유수 VC 의 투자를 받은 경우, 보수적 기술 보호 전략으로 압박을 받아 출원 특허 품질 하락 효과를 확대하는 경향이 있음을 실증하였다. 이에 본 연구는 지정학적 갈등이 기업의 특허출원 전략에 미치는 영향을 규명하였으며, VC 의 특성이 기업의 기술 공개 전략을 어떻게 조정하는지에 대한 메커니즘을 밝힘으로써 국제경영 및 혁신 전략 연구에 기여한다.

This study examines how geopolitical conflict shapes foreign firms’ patent filing strategies, with particular attention to patent quality. While prior research has largely focused on the macro-level consequences of geopolitical tensions, this study highlights the unique characteristics of patents as disclosure based and territorially bounded institutions and investigates how rising uncertainty in intellectual property regimes shapes firms’ strategic responses. Using panel data on 2,458 Chinese patent applications filed by 124 U.S. hardware startups between 2008 and 2025, we exploit the escalation of U.S.–China geopolitical tensions after 2018 as an exogenous shock. The results show that heightened geopolitical conflict leads foreign firms to reduce the quality of their overseas patent filings, reflecting a strategic contraction in technological disclosure. Moreover, we find that this effect is significantly amplified for firms backed by prominent home-country VCs, who exert strong governance pressure that encourages more conservative technology protection strategies. By uncovering how geopolitical conflict and investor characteristics jointly shape firms’ patenting behavior, this study contributes to the international business and innovation strategy literatures.
