Performing Pain : A Mixed-Methods Exploration of Sadfishing Content Creation And Adolescent Audience Response on TikTok

초록(요약문)

Sadfishing has emerged as a trend on TikTok in which creators exaggerate their emotional struggles to gain attention, validation, or support. This display is often seen as going beyond genuine emotional disclosure, becoming instead a form of strategic and performative self-presentation shaped for an audience. This study examined how sadfishing content is produced and how adolescents experience it, addressing the limited research on both creation and audience response. Using a mixed-method approach, the study analyzed 104 videos identified as sadfishing and conducted in-depth interviews with 15 adolescents who had prior exposure to sadfishing content. The findings showed that creators carefully construct expression vulnerability through the use of platform features and algorithmic affordances to appear relatable and increase visibility, while adolescents responded with a mixture of sadness, empathy, critical evaluation, emotional fatigue, and emotional whiplash. Adolescents also demonstrated resilience, actively evaluating the authenticity of content and adapting strategies to protect their well-being. The study further highlighted how TikTok’s algorithm plays a critical role, shaping not only what users see but also how this emotional display is shared, reinforced, and felt within the platform.
