초록 (요약문)
스릴러 웹툰의 장르적 실천 방식 본 연구의 목적은 스릴러 장르가 웹툰이라는 디지털 매체 환경 속에서 어떤 방식으로 실천되고 있는지를 종합적으로 분석하는 데 있다. 웹툰은 지난 20 여 년간 한국 콘텐츠 산업의 핵심 매체로 자리 잡았으며, 특히 스릴러 장르는 대중성, 몰입도, 그리고 영상화 적합성을 바탕으로 주요 IP 로 성장하였다. 그러나 산업적 성공에 비해 장르적 특성과 실천 과정을 학문적으로 체계화한 연구는 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 “웹툰은 매체 미학 특성, 이용자 특성, 그리고 산업적 전략의 영향 아래 스릴러 장르를 어떤 방식으로 실천하는가?” 라는 연구 질문을 중심으로 통합적인 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 대상은 <아내를 죽였다>, <잔인한 축제>, <타인은 지옥이다>, <스위트홈>, <나 혼자만 레벨업> 등 대표적인 스릴러 웹툰이다. 스릴러 웹툰의 매체 미학적 특성은 회차 단위의 에피소드 연재, 다층적 서사, 타 장르와의 혼성, 모바일 환경 등으로 요약된다. 클리프행어와 정보 지연을 반복하는 구조는 긴장감을 유지하며, 비선형 서사와 복선, 반전 장치는 독자의 능동적 해석을 유도한다. 또한 로맨스, 개그, 판타지 등 다양한 장르와의 결합은 스릴러 장르의 확장성과 유연성을 보여준다. 또한 모바일 환경에서 멀티미디어 요소(플래시, 애니메이션, AR)의 활용은 웹툰의 스릴러 체험을 다감각적으로 확장하고 있다. 이용자 특성은 능동적 스크롤 조작, 댓글과 팬덤을 통한 피드백 시스템, 스낵 컬처 및 몰아보기 등 양극화된 소비 방식으로 나타난다. 능동적 스크롤 조작은 무한 캔버스를 활용한 여백 구성, 컷의 리듬감, 클로즈업과 정보 분산 방식을 독자 스스로 제어함으로써 스릴러 장르의 새로운 몰입과 감정 경험을 준다. 또한 댓글을 통해 독자들은 집단적 추리와 해석을 통해 서사의 외연을 확장시키며, 이러한 참여는 작가와 플랫폼에 영향을 주는 실질적 피드백 구조로 작동한다. 산업적 전략은 유료화 모델과 IP 확장을 중심으로 한다. 유료화 시스템은 회차 말 긴장 유발을 위한 클리프행어 구조와 결합되며, 이는 서사 전략에 직접적인 영향을 미친다. 영상화에 용이한 시각적 구성, 글로벌 수용성, 제작 효율성 등은 스릴러 웹툰이 가장 활발하게 IP 확장이 이루어지는 장르가 된 배경이다. 또한 본 연구는 웹툰과 영화의 차별적 표현 방식을 세 가지 측면—시간 구조, 연출 기제, 서사 구조—에서 비교하였다. 이를 통해 스릴러 웹툰은 자율화, 참여화, 분산화라는 고유한 체험 방식을 보이며, 독자의 스크롤 행위와 실시간 피드백이 장르의 긴장 구조를 재편하는 새로운 체험 방식을 창출하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이러한 장르 실천은 <끝까지 간다>, <마녀> 등 영화에도 영향을 미치며, 웹툰의 클리프행어 구조와 정보 지연 전략이 영화의 구성 전략으로 전이되는 사례로 나타난다. 이는 스릴러 웹툰이 단순한 장르 소비 콘텐츠를 넘어, 동시대 시청각 서사의 형식과 구조를 변화시키는 중심 축으로 부상하고 있음을 시사한다. 이렇듯 본 연구는 스릴러 웹툰이 디지털 매체 환경과 산업적 구조 속에서 독자의 능동적 참여, 분산적 서사 전략, 상업적 요구와의 결합을 통해 고유한 장르 실천 방식을 형성하고 있음을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 이를 통해 웹툰이 스릴러 장르의 미학을 재구성하며 동시대 콘텐츠 생태계에서 중심 장르로 부상하고 있음을 규명하였다. 나아가 본 연구는 장르가 매체, 이용자, 산업의 상호작용 속에서 새로운 매체 양식으로 형성되는 과정을 밝힌 이론적, 실천적 분석틀을 제공하였다. 주제어: 스릴러 웹툰, 장르 실천, 클리프행어, 세로 스크롤, 에피소드 연재, 이용자 참여, IP 확장

This study aims to comprehensively analyze how the thriller genre is practiced within the digital medium of webtoons. Over the past two decades, webtoons have established themselves as a central medium in the Korean content industry. In particular, the thriller genre has emerged as a key intellectual property (IP) due to its popularity, immersive storytelling, and high adaptability to screen-based media. However, despite its industrial success, there has been a lack of systematic academic research on the genre-specific practices of thriller webtoons. Therefore, this study investigates how thriller webtoons implement the thriller genre through three analytical dimensions: media aesthetics, user characteristics, and industrial strategies. The analysis focuses on five representative works: I Killed My Wife, Bloody Festival, Strangers from Hell, Sweet Home, and Solo Leveling. In terms of media aesthetics, the core features of thriller webtoons include episodic serialization, multilayered narratives, hybridization with other genres, and adaptation to mobile environments. The repetitive use of cliffhangers and delayed information sustains tension, while nonlinear plots, foreshadowing, and twists invite active reader interpretation. Moreover, hybrid combinations with romance, comedy, and fantasy showcase the genre’s flexibility and expansion. Mobile-based multimedia elements such as Flash animation, motion effects, and AR further enhance the multi-sensory experience of thrillers in webtoons. In terms of user characteristics, thriller webtoons engage readers through vertical scrolling, comment-based feedback systems, and polarized consumption patterns—ranging from snack culture to binge reading. The infinite canvas and rhythm of scrolling allow users to control the pacing and emotional impact of suspense. Additionally, readers collaboratively expand the narrative through speculation and discussion in the comment sections, which in turn provide real-time feedback that influences creators and platforms. Industrial strategies center on monetization models and IP expansion. Paid systems are structurally intertwined with cliffhanger-based storytelling, shaping the narrative itself. The visual composition, global accessibility, and production efficiency of thriller webtoons contribute to their dominance in multimedia adaptation. This study also compares the expressive methods of webtoons and films across three dimensions—temporal structure, directorial techniques, and narrative configuration. It demonstrates that thriller webtoons embody a unique experiential mode characterized by decentralization, interactivity, and user autonomy, wherein the reader’s scrolling actions and feedback mechanisms reshape the tension dynamics of the genre. Furthermore, these genre practices have influenced film narratives, as seen in A Hard Day and The Witch, where webtoon-style cliffhangers and delayed exposition are adopted as cinematic strategies. This indicates that thriller webtoons are no longer mere entertainment products but have become a central force in reshaping contemporary audiovisual narrative forms. Ultimately, this study provides empirical evidence that thriller webtoons have developed distinctive genre practices through the interplay of digital media environments, user interactivity, and industrial imperatives. It confirms that webtoons are reconfiguring the aesthetics of the thriller genre and emerging as a pivotal genre form in today’s content ecosystem. Furthermore, it offers a theoretical and practical framework to understand how genre evolves into new media forms through the interactions among medium, audience, and industry.
