의도 기반 의미 이론은 의미론적 속성들을 의도, 믿음 같은 정신 상태들로 환원하려는 시도이며, 그라이스적 기획은 의도 기반 의미 이론의 일종이다. 그라이스적 기획은 언어 표현들과 관련된 의미 개념을 의미론적 개념에 의존하지 않으면서 화자 의미로 설명하려고 하고, 또한 화자 의미 개념을 의미론적 개념에 의존하지 않으면서 화자의 소통 의도로 해명하려고 한다. 이 글은 그라이스적 기획을 견지하는 한 화자 의미 개념을 올바로 정의하지 못한다는 것을 주장하면서, 세 가지 근거를 들어 논증한다. 첫째, 그라이스적 기획에 따라 제시된 화자 의미 정의들이 해소하기 어려운 반례들이 있다. 둘째, 의미론적 개념을 사용하여 화자 의미 개념을 정의하면 이런 반례들을 해소할 수 있다. 셋째, 의미론적 개념을 포함하면서 이런 반례들을 해소하는 그럴듯한 화자 의미 정의가 있다. 이 정의는 화자의 소통 의도와 무관하게 이해되는 (문자 그대로) 말해진 바 개념을 포함한다.

The Gricean program is an intention-based theory of meaning that seeks to reduce semantic properties to mental states, such as intentions and beliefs. It aims to explain the notion of linguistic meaning in terms of speaker’s meaning without relying on semantic notions, and to account for the notion of speaker’s meaning in terms of speaker’s communicative intentions without relying on semantic notions. This paper argues that the Gricean program fails to adequately define the notion of speaker’s meaning and presents three reasons to support this claim: First, existing definitions of speaker’s meaning, proposed according to the Gricean program, struggle to eliminate certain types of counterexamples. Second, these counterexamples can be eliminated by incorporating a semantic notion into a definition of speaker’s meaning. Third, there is a plausible alternative definition of speaker’s meaning, which avoids these counterexamples and involves the semantic notion, i.e., the notion of what is (literally) said that is understood independently of the speaker’s communicative intentions.
