틈새(니치) OTT 플랫폼인 비키는 모두에게 어필하려는 서비스가 아니라는 점을 내세우며, 대신 아시아 콘텐츠, 특히 글로벌 시청자를 위한 한국 드라마에 중점을 두고, 다양한 형태의 팬 생산성을 지원하는 독특한 사회적 매개를 제공한다. 디지털 플랫폼이 발전함에 따라 창작자와 시청자 간의 경계는 점점 더 흐려지고 있으며, 그 결과 의미는 더 이상 원작자에 의해 단독으로 생산되는 것이 아니라, 시청자에 의해 지속적으로 재해석되고 맥락화되고 있다. 이러한 변화에 대응하여, 본 논문은 John Fiske 의 팬덤의 문화경제 이론을 바탕으로 비키가 시청자 경험을 어떻게 형성하고, 팬들이 한국 드라마의 글로벌 가시성에 어떻게 참여하는지를 고찰한다. 본 연구는 공식 문화가 남긴 공백을 무급 팬들이 문화 노동자로서 어떻게 메우는지를 강조한다. 팬들은 개인적 의미를 부여하고 감정적 유대를 형성하며, 시청 행위를 공유되고 사회적으로 의미 있는 실천으로 전환시키는 과정을 통해 드라마 경험을 공동으로 구성한다. 그러나 아시아 콘텐츠에 대규모 투자를 진행 중인 대형 OTT 서비스들이 등장함에 따라, 특히 한국 드라마가 니치 팬덤을 넘어 주류 장르로 확장되면서 비키는 새로운 역학에 직면하고 있다. 이러한 압력에도 불구하고, 팬들은 여전히 강력한 참여 및 가시성의 동력으로 작용하며, 비키를 합법적인 스트리밍 플랫폼이자 팬 커뮤니티의 목소리가 플랫폼이 본래의 정체성을 유지하도록 지속적으로 상기시키는 독특한 대안으로 자리매김하게 한다.

Viki, a niche OTT platform, brands itself as a service that does not aim to appeal to everyone; instead, it strengthens its focus on Asian content, particularly Korean dramas for a global audience, and offers distinctive social affordances that support diverse forms of fan productivity. As digital platforms evolve, the boundary between creator and audience has become increasingly blurred, and as a result, meaning is no longer produced solely by original creators but is continuously reinterpreted and recontextualized by viewers. In response to this shift, this thesis draws on John Fiske’s cultural economy of fandom to examine how Viki shapes audience experiences and enables fans to participate in the global visibility of Korean dramas. This study highlights how unpaid fans, as cultural laborers, fill the gap left by official culture. Fans co-construct the drama experience itself, embedding personal meaning, fostering emotional connection, and transforming viewing into a shared, socially meaningful practice. However, as larger OTT services invest heavily in Asian content, Viki faces new dynamics—especially as Korean dramas expand beyond niche fandoms into mainstream genres. Despite these pressures, fans remain a powerful driver of engagment and visibility, thereby positioning Viki as a legal streaming platform and a distinctive alternative where fan community voices serve as a continued reminder for the platform to stay true to its roots.
