초록 (요약문)
본 연구는 초고령사회로 진입한 한국 사회에서 부모 돌봄을 오롯이 떠맡게 된 중년 자녀들의 경험을 중심으로, 일과 돌봄의 양립이라는 이중과업 속에서 형성된 삶의 구조와 정체성의 변화, 그리고 그 본질적 의미를 탐색하였다. 연구참여자는 현재 혹은 과거에 부모를 주요하게 돌본 경험이 있는 40대에서 60대 초반의 중년기 남녀 9명이며, 자료는 반구조화된 심층면접을 통해 수집되었다. Giorgi의 현상학적 분석 절차를 적용한 결과, ‘흘러든 돌봄, 피할 수 없던 자리’, ‘일과 돌봄 사이에서의 외줄타기’, ‘가족이라는 울타리와 책임이라는 무게’, ‘제도 너머, 닫히지 않는 책임’, ‘돌봄이 지나간 자리, 길을 잃은 나’, ‘고요한 균열, 돌봄 속에 비친 얼굴들’, ‘돌봄의 길목에서 피어난 관계의 풍경’ 등 7개의 상위주제가 도출되었으며, 총 22개의 하위주제로 구성되었다. 연구참여자들은 대체로 자발적 의사보다 구조적‧관계적 배치에 의해 돌봄 주체가 되었으며, 돌봄은 생계유지와의 갈등, 직업 단절, 감정 소진 등의 위기를 야기하면서도 관계 회복과 존재 재구성의 가능성도 함께 내포하고 있었다. 돌봄은 단지 가족윤리의 실천을 넘어, 수행자의 정체성, 감정, 삶의 방향에 깊이 관여하는 다층적이고 실존적인 여정으로 나타났으며, 현행 돌봄 제도는 이러한 경험을 충분히 지지하지 못하고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 일과 돌봄의 양립이 개인의 노력만으로 해결될 수 없는 구조적 문제임을 밝히며, 돌봄을 받는 부모와 이를 수행하는 자녀 모두를 고려한 정책 설계의 필요성을 제언한다. 이를 통해 가족 기반 돌봄의 부담을 사회적으로 분산하고, 수혜자와 돌봄자를 아우르는 통합적 접근, 그리고 지역사회 중심의 연계 체계 구축이 중요한 과제로 부각된다. 주요어: 부모 돌봄, 일과 돌봄의 병행, 중년 자녀, 현상학, 가족 돌봄

This study explores the lived experiences of middle-aged adult children in South Korea who have become the primary caregivers for their aging parents amid the nation’s transition into a super-aged society. Focusing on the dual demands of employment and caregiving, the research examines the structural changes in life and identity that emerge from such caregiving responsibilities and seeks to uncover their essential meaning. Participants included nine men and women in their 40s to early 60s who were currently or previously engaged in primary caregiving for their parents. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological method. The analysis yielded seven main themes and 22 subthemes: “Caregiving that flowed in—an unavoidable position,” “Tightrope walking between work and care,” “The enclosure of family and the weight of responsibility,” “Beyond the system—unending obligations,” “Where care once remained—the self that lost its way,” “Quiet fractures—reflections in care,” and “Scenes of relationship—blossoming at the threshold of care.” Participants’ caregiving roles were shaped less by voluntary choice and more by structural and relational positioning within the family. While caregiving brought about crises such as work–care conflicts, career disruptions, and emotional exhaustion, it also held possibilities for relationship repair and existential reconfiguration. Care emerged not merely as a family ethic but as a complex, existential journey that deeply influenced the caregiver’s identity, emotions, and life direction. However, current caregiving policies were found inadequate in supporting such multifaceted experiences. This study reveals that balancing work and caregiving is a structural challenge, not one resolvable through individual effort alone. It calls for policy frameworks that consider both the aging parents receiving care and the children providing it. By doing so, it highlights the importance of socially redistributing caregiving responsibilities, adopting an integrative approach that encompasses both care recipients and providers, and constructing community-based support networks.
