This thesis explores the development of diplomatic relations between Czechoslovakia (and later the Czech Republic) and the Republic of Korea from 1989 to 1993, a transformative period marked by significant geopolitical changes. The study examines how the end of the Cold War influenced Czechoslovakia’s foreign policy, which had been predominantly aligned with Soviet interests. The research highlights the motivations behind Czechoslovakia's decision to establish diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea in 1990, analyzing the internal and external factors driving this shift. A key focus is placed on the Republic of Korea’s "Nordpolitik" policy, which aimed to strengthen ties with Eastern European countries, including former Soviet satellite states, as the Cold War concluded. Despite initial reluctance due to Czechoslovakia's longstanding alignment with North Korea, the nation recognized the benefits of expanding its diplomatic and economic horizons, driven by opportunities for trade, investment, and participation in international organizations. By conducting a detailed analysis of primary sources, such as government archives, diplomatic correspondence, and official agreements, this thesis uncovers the political, economic, and strategic considerations that shaped this pivotal foreign policy decision. It addresses the broader geopolitical implications of Czechoslovakia’s pivot toward the Republic of Korea, providing insight into the role of economic diplomacy during this transitional phase of both countries' histories. Finally, the study reflects on the ongoing evolution of Czech-South Korean relations following the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, emphasizing the lasting impact of these early diplomatic efforts on modern-day bilateral ties. 이 논문은 1989년부터 1993년까지, 중대한 지정학적 변화가 있었던 전환기의 체코슬로바키아(이후 체코 공화국)와 대한민국 간의 외교 관계 발전을 다룬다. 본 연구는 냉전 종식이 소련의 이해관계에 주로 맞춰져 있던 체코슬로바키아의 외교 정책에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴본다. 이 연구는 1990년 체코슬로바키아가 대한민국과 외교 관계를 수립하게 된 배경과 동기를 조명하며, 이러한 변화의 내적·외적 요인을 분석한다. 특히 대한민국의 "북방정책"에 주목하는데, 이 정책은 냉전 종식과 함께 동유럽 국가들, 특히 과거 소련의 위성국들과의 관계 강화를 목표로 했다. 체코슬로바키아는 오랫동안 북한과 밀접한 관계를 유지해 온 역사로 인해 초기에는 소극적이었으나, 무역, 투자, 국제기구 참여 등의 기회를 통해 외교 및 경제 지평을 넓히는 데 이점이 있다는 점을 인식하게 되었다. 본 논문은 정부 기록 보관소, 외교 문서, 공식 협정 등 주요 1차 자료를 정밀 분석함으로써, 이러한 중대한 외교 정책 결정에 영향을 준 정치적, 경제적, 전략적 고려사항을 밝혀낸다. 또한 체코슬로바키아가 대한민국과의 외교 관계로 방향을 전환하게 된 사건의 보다 넓은 지정학적 함의에 주목하며, 이 과도기 동안 양국이 추진한 경제 외교의 역할에 대한 통찰을 제공한다. 마지막으로 1993년 체코슬로바키아의 분리 이후 지속되고 있는 체코-대한민국 관계의 발전을 고찰하며, 초기 외교적 노력들이 현대 양국 관계에 미친 지속적인 영향을 강조한다.
