초록 (요약문)
This thesis reads Elizabeth Gaskell’s posthumous novel “Wives and Daughters” from a Darwinian-feminist perspective. There has been a lack of female criticism on Gaskell’s works, because of the fact that, compared to her contemporaries such as the Brontë sisters and George Eliot, she did not take an active stance in the gender issues of her day. This thesis hopes to reconsider Gaskell’s attitude towards feminism by arguing that Molly, the heroine of the novel, shows an independent Darwinian form of growth, which is demarcated from the traditional bildung as envisioned by Hegel and Goethe in its multifarious trajectory. This thesis presents Molly as being devoted to the observation of the everyday minor details. In making a typically Darwinian form of observation in the small, insignificant and minor things, Molly matures in to a young woman who exercises some degree of power in her selection of sexual partner.

본 논문은 19 세기 여류작가 엘리자베스 개스캘의 마지막 소설 “아내들과 딸들” 을 다윈주의 페미니즘 관점에서 분석한다. 엘리자베스 개스캘의 작품에 대한 기존의 페미니즘 비평은 소극적인 비평에서 그치는 경우가 많았다. 그녀의 편지나 일기장에서 추측할 수 있듯, 개스캘은 중산층 출신의 목사 부인으로서 자신의 본분에 충실하였으며, 동시대 작가인 브론테 자매와 조지 엘리엇과는 달리 사회 및 제도적 모순을 소설을 통해 직접적으로 비판하지는 않았기 때문이다. 본 논문은 다윈주의 페미니즘이라는 비평적 이론을 통해 “아내들과 딸들” 의 여주인공 몰리의 여성성을 좀 더 폭넓은 시각에서 분석하고자 한다. 특히 다윈주의 페미니즘 이론에서 강조되는 여성의 성선택이론이 어떻게 소설 속에서 강조되는 지 살펴 볼 것이다. 여주인공 몰리는 성장 과정 속에서 끊임없는 성찰을 통해 자신에게 적합한 배우자가 누구인지 알아가게 된다. 몰리가 “집안의 천사”의 전형이라고 알려진 기존의 인식을 깨기 위해 그녀가 어떻게 다윈주의와 관련된 과학적인 지식을 배우게 되고 과학적 사고방식 및 방법론을 자신의 일상생활에 적용시키는 지 살펴본다.
