초록 (요약문)
본고는 호네트(Axel Honneth)의 사회적 자유와 데스먼드(William Desmond)의 섬김을 중심으로 자유론을 고찰한다. 호네트는 현시대에서 자유의 개념이 개인적 선택권이 나 자율성으로만 이해되고 개인적 자유의 이념이 절대화되면서 발생하는 공허감과 고독 감을 독특한 병리현상으로 이해하며, 이러한 협소한 관점이 개인과 사회에 초래한 고통 을 사회적 자유에 대한 깊은 이해를 통해 해소할 수 있다고 주장한다. 이러한 호네트의 문제의식을 데스먼드가 개념화한 ‘사이론적(metaxological)’ 방법론 에서의 자유 이해를 통해 뒷받침하고자 한다. ‘사이론적’ 태도는 자기와 타자의 ‘사이’의 자기중심적으로 규정되지 않는 애매모호함을 존중하려고 시도한다. 이러한 맥락에서 자유는 인간의 창조물이 아니라 절대적 기원으로부터 해방이라는 ‘선물’로서 부여된다. 이 선물은 자기를 위한 자기중심성을 벗어나 타자에게 나아가는 섬김의 가능성을 내포한다. 따라서 인간은 타자를 지향하는 가운데에서 궁극적인 의미의 자유를 실현한다. 데스 먼드는 고통의 문제를 자유와 연관지어 다루는데, 존재의 고통이 어떻게 타자에 대한 인내로서의 자유로 변혁되어 나가는지를 설명하며 이를 통해 고통의 타애적 의미를 밝힌다. 호네트가 현대인의 병으로 지적한 ‘비규정성의 고통’에 대하여, 본고는 ‘비규정성’이 주체중심적으로 해소될 것이 아니라 사이론적인 관점에 의하여 존중될 수 있는 것임을 밝힌다. 또한 ‘사회병리’에 관한 사회철학적 규정이 개인들의 다양한 삶의 양상을 규정 한다는 점에서 이 개념의 한계에 대해 검토한다. 결론적으로, 개인적 자유의 협소한 이 해에서 사회적 자유의 이해로 이행할 필요성을 주장한 호네트의 문제의식은 데스먼드의 사이론적 존재론에 의해 창조적으로 발전될 수 있다.

The aim of this paper is to explore the understanding of freedom, regarding ‘social freedom’ of Axel Honneth and ‘agapeic service’ of William Desmond. Honneth understands the contemporary concept of freedom as limited to individual choice or autonomy, and emptiness and loneliness is caused by such narrow understanding. Honneth argues that the suffering could be released through a deeper understanding of social freedom. This study aims to support Honneth’s viewpoint by employing Desmond’s ‘metaxological’ approach in understanding freedom. The metaxological approach respects the ambiguity of the other. In such way, freedom is not a human creation but a ‘gift’ given from an absolute origin. This gift implies the released freedom, that goes beyond self-determining sovereignty and transcends to serving others. Desmond addresses the problem of suffering in relation to freedom, explaining how the suffering is transformed into freedom as patience towards others. Regarding the ‘Suffering of indeterminacy’ that Honneth identifies as a pathological problem, I suggest that indeterminacy should not be resolved from self-determining perspective, but could be respected from a metaxological viewpoint. Additionally, I examine the limitations of the concept of ‘pathology’ as defined by social philosophy, in that it is a univocal understanding of diverse aspects of life. In conclusion, Honneth’s arguement about understanding of social freedom could be creatively developed through Desmond's metaxological ontology.
