초록 (요약문)
This thesis attempts to demonstrate the representation of the disabled body in Angela Carter’s novel The Magic Toyshop (1967) with David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder’s narrative prosthesis theory and Elizabeth Grosz’s volatile body theory. This thesis attempts to argue that Carter’s disability representation both goes with and against the conventional disabled body representation method, which utilizes disability as a symbol. Carter places the disabled bodies of Margaret and Finn to be read conventionally, but she gives considerable attention to those bodies’ materiality and corporeality. In the discussions about The Magic Toyshop, the materiality of the disabled body has been received little attention, and the disability of the character was regarded as a symbol with specific implications rather than being defined as an actual disability revealed through the material body. Accordingly, the representation of the disabled body emphasizing the materiality revealed in Carter’s novels was rarely discussed. This thesis redefined Margaret’s silence as mutism and Finn’s slanted eye as strabismus, and demonstrates various material representations of disabilities revealed in The Magic Toyshop to examine Carter’s unique way of representing disabilities that have not been discussed so far.

본 논문은 안젤라 카터(Angela Carter)의 『매직 토이숍 (The Magic Toyshop)』(1967)에 드러나는 카터의 장애 있는 몸 재현을 데이비드 T. 미첼(David T. Mitchell)과 샤론 L. 스나이더(Sharon L. Snyder)의 내러티브 보철물(narrative prosthesis) 이론과 엘리자베스 그로츠(Elizabeth Grosz)의 유동적인 몸(Volatile Body) 이론을 통해 분석한다. 본 논문은 카터의 장애 재현 방식이 전통적인 장애의 상징적 이용의 방식을 채택하면서도 장애 있는 몸의 물질적 특성과 행위성을 충실히 서술함을 통해 전통적 서술에 반하는 이중적 서술로 전통적 장애 재현 방식과 거리를 두고 있음을 주장하고자 한다. 매직 토이숍에 관련된 기존의 논의에서 장애 있는 몸의 물질성은 거의 주목받지 못했으며, 인물이 가진 장애는 물질적인 신체를 통해 드러나는 장애로 정의되기보다는 특정한 함의가 있는 상징으로 여겨졌다. 이로 인해 카터의 소설에 드러나는 장애 있는 몸의 물질성을 강조한 재현 방식은 거의 논의되지 않았다. 본 논문은 특히 자주 인용되는 마가렛(Margaret)의 침묵과 핀(Finn)의 비뚤어진 눈을 각각 함묵증과 사시라는 신체적 장애로 재정의하고 매직 토이숍에 드러나는 장애의 다양한 물질적 재현을 검토하여 지금까지 논의되지 않았던 카터의 독특한 장애 재현 방식을 고찰하고자 한다.
