초록 (요약문)
This study explores the philosophy of freedom based on the metaxological ontology of contemporary Irish philosopher William Desmond. The clash between the opposing values of individual freedom and communal safety, exemplified during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, starkly highlights diverse understandings and conflicts surrounding freedom, leaving us in confusion. Such conflicts arise from a lack of proper understanding of freedom and can be interpreted as issues stemming from the inevitable tension between human being and communal life. This research sheds light on Desmond's unique view of freedom, which goes beyond the notion of liberation from constraints and approaches freedom as a process of ‘self-becoming’ within a community of being in relation with others. This thesis traces the relationship between freedom and necessity within the philosophical traditions of ancient Greek philosophy, medieval theological worldviews, and modern reason-centered thought. Based on this historical context, the study argues that Desmond's theory of freedom transcends the limitations of traditional notions of freedom, offering an original perspective. Desmond defines freedom through the ontological foundations of ‘givenness’ and ‘becoming,’ framing it as a process of ethical self-transcendence through communal life and agapeic love. He asserts that freedom is concretized through creative interplay within the tension between necessity and freedom and gains its true meaning in relation to others. Desmond emphasizes that human freedom is realized through intermediation with the community, the environment, and others. He particularly warns of the spiritual arrogance and radical evil that can arise from the deepening of freedom. Desmond underscores that true ethical self-fulfillment(selving) is achievable only when freedom is exercised in a way that respects the uniqueness of others and conveys an excess of love. Through this framework, Desmond presents a new philosophical vision for overcoming current anthropocentrism, ecological crises, and communal conflicts. This paper examines the philosophical significance of Desmond's philosophy of freedom by focusing on three central axes—being, human being, and community—through the lens of his metaxological thinking, as presented in his major works Being and the Between, Ethics and the Between, and God and the Between.

본 논문은 아일랜드 현대 철학자인 윌리엄 데스몬드(William Desmond)의 사이존재론(metaxological ontology)에 기반한 자유론을 탐구한다. 코로나19 대유행과 같은 위 기 상황에서 보여주는 개인의 자유와 공동체의 안전이라는 상반된 가치의 충돌은 자유 에 대한 다양한 이해와 갈등의 극명한 예로서 우리를 혼란에 빠뜨린다. 이러한 갈등은 자유에 대한 올바른 인식의 결핍에서 비롯되며, 인간 존재와 공동체적 삶의 필연적 긴 장에서 발생하는 문제로 해석될 수 있다. 본 연구는 자유를 단순히 억압에서의 해방으로 이해하지 않고, 존재 공동체 내에서 타자와 함께하는 ‘자기 되어감’(self-becoming) 의 과정으로 접근하는 데스몬드의 독창적인 자유론을 조명한다. 논문은 철학사적 맥락에서 자유와 필연의 관계를 고대 그리스 철학, 중세 신학적 세계관, 근대 이성 중심적 사유의 흐름 속에서 추적한다. 이를 바탕으로 데스몬드의 자유론이 전통적 자유론의 한계를 넘어선 독창적 관점을 제공함을 논증한다. 데스몬드는 자유를 존재의 ‘소여성’과 ‘생성적 되어감’이라는 존재론적 기반 위에서, 공동체적 삶과 타애적 사랑(agape)을 통한 윤리적 자기 초월의 과정으로 정의한다. 그는 자유가 필연성과의 긴장 속에서 창조적 상호작용을 통해 구체화되며, 타자와의 관계 속에서 진정한 의미를 획득한다고 주장한다. 데스몬드는 또한 인간의 자유가 공동체와 환경, 타자와의 상호 매개 속에서 실현될 수 있음을 강조한다. 특히, 자유의 심화가 초래할 수 있는 영적인 교만과 급진적 악의 위험성을 경고하며, 자유가 타자의 고유성을 존중하고 사랑의 넘침을 전달하는 방식으로 행사될 때 비로소 진정한 윤리적 자기 완성(자기화)이 가능하다고 본다. 이를 통해 데스몬드는 현대의 인간중심주의와 생태 위기, 공동체적 갈등을 극복할 수 있는 새로운 철학적 비전을 제시한다. 이 논문은 데스몬드의 핵심 저작인 Being and the Between, Ethics and the Between, God and the Between을 중심으로 그가 독창적으로 제시하고 있는 사이존재론적 사유에 입각하여 존재, 인간, 공동체라는 세 가지 축을 중심으로 데스몬드 자유론의 철학적 의의를 밝힌다.
