The Loss of Humanness by an Intimate Partner : Exploring Dehumanization in Romantic Relationships

친밀한 파트너에 의한 인간성 상실: 연인 관계에서의 비인간화

초록 (요약문)

The present study explored the associations of various psychological factors with dehumanization and subsequent relationship satisfaction in romantic relationships. Two studies assessed animalistic and mechanistic dehumanization from both target and perpetrator perspectives. Through correlational and multiple regression analyses, Study 1 (N = 150) found negative associations of emotional expressivity with the suffering of mechanistic dehumanization, and positive associations of anxious attachment with both the suffering and perpetration of mechanistic dehumanization. Furthermore, all forms of dehumanization were linked to lower levels of relationship satisfaction. Taking a closer look at attachment style and dehumanization, Study 2 (N = 350) replicated the findings of Study 1 and found additional relations between anxious attachment and animalistic dehumanization, and between avoidant attachment and both dehumanization forms. Moreover, Study 2 results indicate that emotional perspective-taking and communication competence mediate these relationships for mechanistic dehumanization and overall dehumanization, respectively. These insights help to fill the research gap on the occurrence of dehumanization in intimate partnerships.
