Why did Germany not become a nuclear power? How a nuclear taboo shaped the discourse of a German nuclearization.

초록

The German literature on nuclear weapons is scarce. A disinformation campaign by the Adenauer administration in the 1950s has led to the public believe that Germany has never had any intentions on gaining nuclear capabilities. This however is wrong as modern research shows and opens a wholly new area of research to be explored. Current literature on the topic however has mostly been dealing with the problem of German nuclearization from an historical background. While there has been some research on the research from an international relations perspective, such research has been conducted from a realist perspective. The realist perspective although powerful is lacking explanatory power when it comes to the behavior of German policy makers and politicians. Constructivist theory of the nuclear taboo however offers a good supplementary explanation for inner political conduct during the 1950s and early 60s. This research examines debates in the German Bundestag closely related to the nuclearization of Germany and takes a closer look at what and how representatives talk about nuclear weapons. The presence of a nuclear taboo in the German debate can be shown in all parties represented in the Bundestag and an effect on the public is also visible through anti-nuclear weapons movements in the late 50s and early 60s.
