The Relationship between Rejection Sensitivity and Emotional Well being: The Mediating Effects of Social Withdrawal, Self Assertiveness and the Moderating Role of Emotional Clarity

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of social withdrawal, self-assertiveness, emotional clarity in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and emotional well-being. For this purpose of the study, the questionnaires were conducted for adult men and women in their 20s and 40s and the total collected from 422 participants is analyzed using SPSS 28.0 and PROCESS Macro v4.1. Major findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, rejection sensitivity directly negatively affects emotional well-being. Second, social withdrawal showed simple mediating effect in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and emotional well-being. Third, self-assertiveness showed simple mediating effect in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and emotional well-being. Fourth, social withdrawal and self-assertiveness showed serial mediating effect in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and emotional well-being. Fifth, the moderating effect of emotional clarity was not significant in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and social withdrawal, rejection sensitivity and self-assertiveness, rejection sensitivity and emotional well-being. Sixth, the moderating effect of emotional clarity was significant in the relationship between social withdrawal and self-assertiveness. Lastly, the moderating effect of emotional clarity was not significant in the relationship between social withdrawal and emotional well-being, self-assertiveness and emotional well-being. Based on the findings above, the significance, clinical implications, limitations, and suggestions for further study were discussed.
