초록 (요약문)
There are often double standards in terms of how the Western media covers music in different parts of the world. This can particularly be seen in the way in which the Western media covers Korean music industry artists. Previous research has discussed specific artists in the context of certain publications, but not an overall study of actual sentiment being expressed. In order to measure this, this study incorporates public-facing articles and examines their sentiments towards the Korean music industry using the platform MonkeyLearn, with specific values of positive, negative, and neutral assigned to articles and headlines across the years. This study compares similar events in both the Western and Korean industries to see how the coverage varies. The results show that there are some indications of negative bias towards the Korean music industry in the earliest datasets relative to the Western music industry. The results also show that, in later datasets, there is a split between writers who demonstrate more awareness and caution towards these stereotypes and those who continue to focus on these stereotypes in the Korean context. This suggests that the Western media’s bias against the Korean music industry, relative to the Western industry, portrays some problems that need to be addressed in order to be considered fair in its coverage.
