초록/요약
This paper investigates the effect of men and women’s locus of control on their health maintenance practices - specifically, decisions to have enough rest and sleep, exercise, and avoid tobacco and alcohol. Locus of control - a psychological concept - is a level of belief that one is in control of his life events. Using Korean Labor & Income Panel Study (KLIPS), I analyzed direct and indirect routes through which locus of control potentially affects healthy habits. By correlated random effects estimations, I find that both genders with an internal locus of control – a degree to which one believes he is in control of his life events - are more likely to adopt healthy habit. Furthermore, men with an internal locus of control are less likely (i) to smoke and (ii) to maintain their health primarily by having enough rest and sleep because they gain less consumption benefit – or satisfaction – from these practices.
