초록/요약
This thesis analyzes Stephen King’s 1977 novel The Shining in terms of reading and writing. The spatial setting of the novel, the Overlook Hotel, is a place where the past and the present are indistinguishable. Focusing on this inseparable timeframes, this thesis pays attention to the process in which the past and the present become destructed through writing, and the ways in which reading can lead the hauntings of the past into a different future. Firstly, this thesis redefines the father-son relationship between Jack and Danny Torrance as that of the writer and a reader. Defining Jack’s death in terms of Roland Barthes’ ever-influential “The Death of the Author” (1967), this thesis locates the source of Jack’s death in his possessive desire to own and represent the past in his own writing. However, because the past is already implied in the present, ‘re-presentation,’ as an act of bringing the past into the present again, is impossible. Secondly, this thesis analyzes Danny’s shining ability as a reading ability. The shining ability which renders Danny a vision for the past and the future, is defined as the ability to carefully read unstable signifiers. Danny does not share his father’s possessive desire for representation and survives from the Overlook hotel as a reader. This survival gives him a chance to continue his life in the future. However, this thesis takes notice of the fact that Tony, Danny’s future self, is already haunted by the past. The name of Tony comes from Danny’s abusive grandfather Anthony, and the undesirable past is repeated in the form of the nominal inheritance. Lastly, if the signifier of the future is already haunted by the past, the only way to produce newness for the future is to read the past in different ways. This thesis concludes that Danny can read the past in ways that has not been done before, and that he can open up a future that is different from the past, through such reading.

본 논문은 스티븐 킹의 1977년 소설 『더 샤이닝』을 ‘읽기’와 ‘쓰기’의 관점에서 분석한다. 『더 샤이닝』의 공간적 배경인 오버룩 호텔은 과거와 현재가 뒤엉킨 공간이다. 이에 본 논문은 과거와 현재가 쓰기를 통해 해체되는 과정과 읽기를 통해 미래로 나아갈 수 있는 방식에 주목한다. 첫째로, 본 논문은 기존 비평에서와는 달리 잭과 대니 토랜스의 부자관계를 작가와 독자의 관계로 재해석한다. 잭 토랜스의 죽음을 롤랑 바르트의 ‘저자의 죽음’과 동일 선상에서 정의하며 과거에 대한 잭의 작가적 소유욕에 근거해 그의 죽음을 과거를 자신의 재현물로 소유하려는 욕망이 잭을 파멸로 이끈 것으로 분석한다. 나아가 과거는 이미 현재에 들어와 있기에, 그것을 ‘다시’ 글 속에서 현재화한다는 것은 불가능하다. 이에, 본 논문은 과거를 대상화하고 소유해서 ‘다시 현재화’하려는 재현의 글쓰기는 불가능하다고 주장한다. 둘째로, 독자인 대니의 ‘샤이닝’ 능력을 읽기의 관점에서 분석한다. 특히 현재에 살며 과거와 미래를 동시에 볼 수 있는 샤이닝 능력을 불안정한 기표들을 조심스럽게 읽어나갈 수 있는 읽기 능력으로 정의한다. 과거를 소유하려는 작가적 욕망이 없는 대니는 읽기를 통해 오버룩 호텔에서 살아남으며, 생존을 통해 미래로 나아갈 수 있다. 그러나 본 논문은 대니의 10년 후 모습인 토니를 통해 미래 또한 과거에 이미 사로잡혀 있다는 점에 주목한다. 토니의 이름은 대니의 폭력적인 할아버지 안토니에서 따 온 것이며, 이름이라는 유산을 통해 원치 않는 과거가 반복된다. 즉, 미래의 기표가 이미 과거의 영향에 사로잡혀 있다면 미래란 결국 과거를 새롭게 읽는 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 읽기 능력을 가진 대니가 미래를 과거와는 다르게 읽어낼 수 있으며, 다르게 읽음으로서 과거와는 다른 미래를 열 수도 있다고 결론짓는다.
