Employees earn self-esteem and financial rewards when they are involved in meaningful work and producing values. For this reason, organizations make efforts to treat employees better, build better work environment, and improve work processes so that employees can make more commitment to their work by exercising their independence and creativity, which consequently leads to yielding better performance. This study takes a closer look at attitudes and behavior of people who belong to an organization by focusing on the concept of team-based self-esteem. The original assumption is that: self-identity serves as the antecedent of TBSE, and TBSE affects the levels of commitment. To empirically verify the assumption, the research model was established that posits: (1) team socialization and team reputation, playing as team-based enablers, influence the process of shaping team identity and athletic identity, (2) the interaction between team identity and athletic identity contributes to enhancing TBSE, which consequently affecting team commitment and sport commitment. Varsity student-athletes as its research subjects were selected for the study. Unlike professional sports teams, varsity sports teams consist of student-athletes who are around their own age. Then, the varsity student-athletes of Y university were surveyed to empirically verify the hypotheses of this study. The results of the structural model analysis indicate that all of nine hypotheses proposed in this study are supported. The findings of this study imply that: if a team works hard to offer team members favorable conditions and help them build high levels of TBSE through their formation of identities even in uncertain or tough situations, team members get more sensitive to their own values, competency and self-control and, as a result, they develop strong commitments that will benefit both the team and themselves.
