The Effect of Helicopter Parenting on Anxiety in Emerging Adulthood: : The mediating role of self-concept clarity and emotion dysregulation

초록/요약

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of self-concept clarity and emotion dysregulation in the relationship between emerging adults’ perceived level of maternal and paternal helicopter parenting and the level of their anxiety. A total of 317 emerging adults (N=317) between the ages of 18 and 25 participated in the study. The results demonstrated that self-concept clarity and emotion dysregulation sequentially mediated the relationship between helicopter parenting and anxiety. The sequential mediation effect was found for both maternal and paternal helicopter parenting. Dyadic analyses were also carried out with mother vs. father and daughter vs. son. The findings of the study highlight the underlying mechanism of how overly-involved, autonomy-restrictive parenting that has recently been receiving scholarly attention affects the level of anxiety in emerging adulthood. Strengths and limitation as well as implications of current findings are discussed in terms of culture specific parenting tactics and sampling characteristics. Suggestions for future study including effective counseling interventions for young adults with anxiety due to exposure to maladaptive parenting style are also included in the discussion.
