Development and Size-variation Actuation of Encapsulated Perfluorocarbon Bubble

초록/요약

When liquid droplets or gaseous bubbles undergo repetitive size-variation by the external stimuli such as ultrasound, thermal and electrical energy, they could generate continuous micro-streaming or micro-propulsion that could transport small objects near bubbles. The size-changing bubbles have been applied for biomedical and mechanical applications such as drug delivery, medical contrast agent, micro/nano actuators and pumps. Many types of actuators including micro-swimmers or micro-pumps, activated by oscillating bubbles, had already been developed. However, the amplitude of oscillating air bubbles is only about ±3% compared to the initial size. In case of air bubbles in cylindrical tubes, the size variation is still under 10%. Therefore, the bigger size variation of bubbles by external stimuli is required to get high propulsion in miniaturized actuators. In this paper, perfluorocarbon capsule bubbles with core-shell structure are developed to cause large and repeatable size-variation using phospholipid, alginate hydrogel and PDMS. The manufactured perfluorocarbon bubble shows to increase its diameter about 60% with twelve cycles.
