Social Hierarchies in Chinese-Malay Novel Tambahsia

초록/요약

The Malay literature, written by the Chinese of Dutch East Indies, can sometimes provide an insider’s perspective into the lives of the overseas Chinese in European colony, but not many scholars have paid attention to or even been aware of its existence. This study tries to address this delinquency by analyzing one of the Chinese-Malay novel: Tambahsia: Swatoe Tjerita Jang Betoel Soeda Kedjadian di Tanah Betawi antara tahon 1851-1856 (Tambahsia: A Story that Really Happened in Batavia between 1851-1856)—to show how the Chinese perspective and experiences on living among the colonizers and the colonized people could enhance our understanding of Indonesia’s colonial past. This thesis uses the method of Critical Discourse Analysis to analyze how the language is used to portray the unequal relations of power and the underlying ideologies that are used to legitimize existing social relations and differences of power. The analysis suggests that Indies social hierarchies might be more complex than a colonial caste system and might be based on more than one social variable.
