Chronic Failure in US-DPRK Relations : The Multilateral Iran Nuclear Deal in North Korea

초록/요약

This text explores the failure of the DPRK’s integration into the international community by providing analysis of pivotal events leading to the Korean sanctions regime of the 2010s. From the DPRK’s genesis, the state struggled with existential vulnerability of two transnational elements: exogenous military forces by the United States, and the shortcomings in alliance obligations by both the USSR and the PRC. These two negative aspects were compounded with the failure of post-Cold War US-DPRK diplomacy to result in sustainable agreements. The past failures of reaching a long-lasting agreement can be attributed to recurrent coercive diplomacy rooted in mistrust. However, drawing from the tentative success of the Iran Nuclear Deal with the P5+1 members in the wake of the Iranian nuclear crisis of 2002, a JCPOA framed agreement can be implemented in Korea with the ultimate target of maintaining a mutually accepted and resilient agreement.
