본 논문은 시간 초월 모티프를 활용한 드라마에 나타난 과거의 재구성 방식과 캐릭터의 변화를 분석함으로써 동시대 유사한 모티프를 활용한 드라마가 드러내는 사회·문화적 의미를 파악하고자 하였다. 연구대상은 2013년부터 2016년 사이 드라마 중 과거와의 조우를 통해 플롯이 전개되는 <나인: 아홉 번의 시간여행>(tvN, 2013), <미래의 선택>(KBS, 2013), <신의 선물-14일>(SBS, 2014), <시그널>(tvN, 2016)등 네 작품을 선정하였다. 연구는 그레마스와 그 외 여러 학자들의 기호학적 이론을 바탕으로 플롯과 캐릭터 분석을 진행하였다. 플롯 분석을 통해 과거의 재구성의 단계와 방식을 살펴보았고, 캐릭터 분석을 통해 캐릭터가 추구하는 가치와 그 가치의 전환이 드러내는 작품 전체의 의미를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 위의 작품들은 선택적 기억을 통한 과거의 교정과 재구성이라는 반복된 플롯 구조를 보인다. 이러한 과거의 재구성 방식을 통해 과거와 현재 사이 주체의 분열과 시간의 순환적 구성을 통해 나타나는 유기적 사회관을 관찰할 수 있었다. 주인공의 캐릭터 분석을 통해서는 영웅 출현에 대한 기대 심리와 엘리트에 기댄 사회 변혁이라는 보수적 가치 체계를 볼 수 있었다. 마지막으로 주변 인물의 행위소 이동을 통해 사회 정의에 관한 사회·문화 속 도덕적 코드를 파악할 수 있었다.

This study aims to investigate the social and cultural meaning of contemporary dramas with time-travel motif by analyzing the way of reconstructing the past and the changes of actants and characters. It focuses on four South Korean television dramas, of which plots are developed with encounters with the past, aired from 2013 to 2016: <Nine: Nine Times Time Travel>(tvN, 2013), <Mirae’s Choice>(KBS, 2013), <God's Gift – 14 Days>(SBS, 2014), and <Signal>(tvN, 2016). Based on A.J Greimas's semiotic theory and other studies, this research analyzes plots and characters of those dramas: the process and the way of reconstructing the past are observed through the plot analysis. Character's values and change of its stance show the thematic meaning of the whole dramas through the character analysis. Collective memories lead corrections and reconstructions of the past in those dramas. As the past is constructed this way, the consciousness of subject between the past and the present is dismantled. Moreover, the cyclical structure of plots shows the organic view of the world. Throughout the main character analysis, it is perceived that the conservative value system, such as expectations for the emergence of heroes, and the social revolution relying on the social elite group, still remain in modern society. The changes of character's actant show the social and cultural code about social justice.
