Metal nanoparticle conjugated graphene oxide for targeted photothermal therapy

초록/요약

Cancer is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Although a number of techniques are available for treatment, the methods have a number of drawbacks, destroying healthy tissues and cells, to cause various side effects. Here we present the synthesis and in vitro application of a composite nanomaterial, folic acid (FA)-coated graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets functionalized with manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoparticles. While the FA-coated GO nanosheets can be used for targeted photothermal therapy when irradiated with a near infrared (NIR) light, MnO2 nanoparticles degrade hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the tumor microenvironment, countering hypoxia. Therefore MnO2-FA-GO could be potentially powerful therapeutic nanosheets for targeting photothermal therapy.
