A Robust Operation Strategy of Energy Storage Systems with an Uncertain Load Profile

In this thesis, we propose a way to reduce total cost and peak load of factories from a customer point of view. We control energy storage system (ESS) to minimize the total electric cost under the Korea commercial and industrial tariff (KCIT) policy that both considers time of use and peak load. Under KCIT, the average peak load measured in 15 minutes determines the monthly base cost, thus peak load control is crucial. We aim to leverage ESS for both energy arbitrage exploiting ToU as well as peak load reduction based on load prediction. However, load prediction inevitably has some uncertainty, which makes ESS operation challenging with KCIT policy. To tackle it, we propose to apply robust linear optimization to minimize risk in a real time environment. Our approach significantly reduces the total cost compared to the case that does not use robust optimization. In doing this we also consider battery degradation cost, which validates the practical usage of the proposed algorithm.
