Use of Simplified Literature in the ESP Classroom : A Study of Low Intermediate Adult Learners' Written Language Production

초록/요약

This study explores the efficient use of simplified literature for the low intermediate level of adult learners. Both written expressions and character study are examined between the use of simplified and original novels. For one semester of a course of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), students learned business e-mail writing and practiced literary appreciation. Two types of student writings were analyzed to measure the development of their written expressions: two timed-writings to measure growth rate in written expression and two written assignments in combination of business context and literary texts. Both simplified and original text groups produced appropriate written expressions and forms of business e-mail writing. Also, many students in both groups produced crafted writing to show their individuality. This study suggests that (a) simplified literature of classic novels is an efficient material for the low intermediate level of adult learners to develop their linguistic ability and suit their intellectual capacity of literature appreciation; and (b) fictional literature in the ESP classrooms can be a beneficial material to improve flexible thinking and original expression in writing.
