Ultrasound Effects on Toughness of Biodegradable Poly Lactic Acid with Natural Rubber

Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), representative biodegradable polymer, has a potential to solve the waste disposal problems caused by petroleum based polymers. However, PLA is not enough to be an alternative of conventional polymers due to its high brittleness and low price competitiveness. In this study, high brittleness and low price competitiveness of PLA were considerably enhanced by blending with natural rubber (NR). For maintaining the biodegradability of PLA/NR blends, ultrasound imposed in the blending process without using block-copolymer or compatibilizer. As a result of the study, mechanical properties of PLA have been improved significantly. On the other hand, we found the ultrasound sonication helps to disperse the rubber particle in PLA matrix and there exists optimum condition of ultrasound sonication time.
