본고에서는 49년 동안이나 인도 캘커타에서 사랑의 선교회를 이끌었던 마더 데레사의 영적 어둠에 대한 체험과 그 체험이 갖는 내적 의미를 조명해 보았다. ‘빈자의 어머니’ 마더 데레사는 어둠의 성녀였다. 그녀는 인도 캘커타에서 가난한 자, 소외된 자들에게 반평생 하느님의 사랑을 전파하면서도 한편으로 자신은 하느님의 부재 체험이 가져온 영적 어둠을 겪으며 하느님 존재에 대한 의혹, 상실의 외로움, 열정의 무력감, 천국에 대한 공허감 등으로 괴로워했다. 그녀의 이러한 역설적인 삶을 좀 더 정확히 이해하기 위하여 그녀가 겪은 어둠 체험의 진정한 모습과 의미를 해석해 볼 필요가 있다. 연구 방법으로는 마더 데레사의 서간 및 영적 조언자들의 증언에 나타난 영적 어둠 체험들과 마더 데레사의 반응들을 분류하고 내적 의미를 십자가 성 요한의 ‘어둔 밤’을 중심으로 조명하였다. 그녀의 어둠 체험은 하느님께서 영혼의 영적 단련을 위해 내리시는 가톨릭 전통의 영적 ‘어둔 밤’의 은총이었다. 그녀의 어둠 체험은 영혼의 정화의 단계에만 국한되지 않고, 그리스도의 고통과 일치를 위한 사랑과 비움의 어둠, 가난한 이들의 치유를 위한 실천적 어둠이라는 점에서 십자가 성 요한이 제시한 두 개의 어둔 밤 체계와는 차이를 보인다. 그녀는 어둠 체험을 통하여 헌신을 향해 이끄는 단순한 믿음, 고통을 통한 그리스도와의 일치, 애덕실천을 통한 자아실현 그리고 완전한 기쁨의 영적 여정을 할 수 있었다. 이는 어둠 밤이 그녀에게 기능적으로 작용한 모습이며 동시에 그녀가 그에 반응하고 수용해가는 모습이었다. 중요한 것은 그녀의 어둠 체험의 여정이 거창한 계시나 비전에 둘러싸인 신비 체험이 아니라, 가난한 이들과 동거하며 일상의 사소한 일에서 끊임없이 그리스도의 고통에 동참하고 하느님의 사랑을 전파하는 실천적 여정이었다는 사실이다. 결론적으로 마더 데레사의 어둠 체험은 하느님의 은총으로 내려진 영적 ‘어둔 밤’의 체험으로 하느님의 무한한 사랑의 심연으로 들어가는 희망의 통로였으며, 이 통로를 통과하는 데는 거창한 계시나 비전이 필요한 것이 아니라 일상 속에서 단순한 믿음을 지켜내고 작은 것에서부터 이웃에 대한 사랑을 끊임없이 실천하는 것이 필요하다.

We studied Mother Teresa’s experiences of spiritual darkness as represented in her private letters and writings, and memoirs of her spiritual advisers. In her own words, she was ‘a saint of darkness’. She dedicated her whole life for the poor and alienated in the slums of Calcutta; but it is revealed that she was experiencing a life long spiritual darkness and suffered in agony for a long time due to the experience of God’s absence, which had eventually driven her to doubt on God’s existence, a feeling of abandonment from God, experience of powerlessness in apostolic zeal, and a sense of existential emptiness. In order to understand correctly such a paradoxical life experience in depth, we explore and classify her experiences of darkness and her reactions in the light of the theology of the ‘dark nights’ of St John of the Cross. Her experience of darkness was truly God’s grace; it was not only the purifying dark night of the soul which led her to share the Christ’s Passion, but also the darkness of fulfillment leading her to dedicate her whole life for the service of the poor. In this respect, her experience of darkness is uniquely differentiated from the teaching of John of the Cross. At the core of the spiritual journey of the innocent faith of Mother Teresa, there lies the experience of darkness which enhances her life of heroic service and dedication in union with Christ’s suffering. In order to reveal the functionality of the darkness experience, our study mainly focuses on the experience itself and her diverse responses to those experiences as revealed in her writings. Emphasis is given on the fact that her experience of darkness was not a type of vision or revelation, but that of daily journey of humble faith of sharing God’s love and service for the poor joining with Christ’s Passion. In conclusion, Mother Teresa’s experience of darkness was God-given grace of the dark night of the soul, and was a path of hope to the infinite depth of God’s mercy. We learn from her that in order to walk on this path one does not necessarily require God’s grand revelation or visions but the simple faith through which one practices Christian virtue of charity even in a very small daily encounter with neighbors.
