Numerical Study on Mechanical and Biomechanical Performance of Various Centrifugal Blood Pumps

초록/요약

Centrifugal blood pumps are hydraulic devices, which have to be optimal from both mechanical and biomechanical aspects. From the mechanical point of view, the design parameters of a centrifugal pump are quiet straightforward to be achieved. However, biomechanical factors such as hemolysis and thrombosis caused by a centrifugal blood pump can lead to serious health problem, and even organ failure. Hence, careful treatment must be taken when designing a blood pump. In this material four different types of centrifugal blood pumps as cone-type impeller, channel-type impeller, blade-type impeller without shroud and blade-type impeller with shroud are investigated using CFD method. Hydraulic performances of the pumps are compared for a wide range of the operational conditions. In addition, three different predefined conditions (ECMO, VAD and full-load) are investigated in terms of mechanical aspect such as flow structures, pressure values and scalar stress. In terms of biomechanical aspect, an Eulerian based modified index of hemolysis (MIH) and thrombus generation for each condition is calculated and the results are compared. Therefore, performance of different types of centrifugal blood pumps has been investigated in the context of mechanical and biomechanical aspect. The results show that blade-type impeller with shroud as best performing centrifugal blood pump.
