초록/요약
본 논문은 대중매체에서 Asian American 이 어떻게 비추어 지는 지에 관한 고찰이다. 이 연구는 현재 21 세기를 바탕으로 하며 그 이유는 특히 21 세기 대중매체에서 Asian American 캐릭터가 자주 등장하기 때문이다. 본 논문의 연구대상은 Asian American 이며 모든 Asian 들을 포함하지 않는다. 이러한 연구 대상의 제한은 미국 내 모든 동양인에 관한 편견을 논하기 보다 Asian American 에 과한 집중조명이 목적이기 때문이다. 미국 대중매체에서 등장한 모든 아시아인 캐릭터를 논한다면 연구의 관점이나 목적이 흐려질 위험이 크다. 이 논문은 HBO 의 Entourage (2004)에 등장하는 Lloyd Lee 를 시작으로, AMC 의 The Walking Dead (2010)에 등장하는 Glenn Rhee, 그리고 YouTube 라는 새로운 매체에서 활동하고 있는 David So, Joe Jo 와 Bart Kwan 같이 여러 가지 인물들을 다루며, 이 인물들이 현재 21 세기, 미국에서 살고 있는 Asian Americans 에 대해서 어떠한 이미지를 비추고 있는지에 대해 연구를 한 결과이다. 아시안에 관한 model minority 경향이 두드러지는 Lloyd Lee 에 반해 Glenn 이라는 캐릭터는 그 경향이 줄어들었다. 그 대신, Glenn 은 그 외의 다양한 방면의 모습을 보여준다. 이 변화는 지금까지의 Asian American 의 전형적인 틀을 깬 현상이다. 더 나아가 YouTube 라는 인터넷 매체를 통해 더 많은 Asian American 코미디언들은 현실의 단편을 보여줌으로써 그 변화를 빠르게 전달하고 있다. 본 논문에서, Asian American 들이 비추어지는 이미지의 변화를 연구함과 동시에, YouTube 라는 새로운 매체가 미국 대중매체에 어떠한 변화를 주었는지도 드러낼 수 있다.

The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the changing portrayal of male Asian American characters in American popular media. It will start off with a brief historical analysis, and an overview of Yellow Peril and Yellow face. Asian characters, especially male Asian characters, had been historically utilized for either establishing an enemy of the state, or for fulfilling comedic purposes. The primary texts of this thesis start from the era of the model minority stereotype, and extend into YouTube celebrities. Character Lloyd Lee from Entourage (2004) shows characteristics of the model minority stereotype of the very obedient, hard-working individual that possesses a high academic pedigree. His ultimate accomplishment of achieving his goals further validates his suitability to the model minority stereotype. Glenn Rhee from AMC’s The Walking Dead (2010) is an example of a male Asian American character that strays away from all three aforementioned stereotypes of the model minority, Yellow Peril and Yellow Face – thus establishing a feat of being the well-rounded, common Asian American. One key reason for The Walking Dead being able to introduce such an Asian American character may have been due to an influx of Asian American writers and producers that work behind-the-scenes. Finally, YouTube celebrities David So, Joe Jo and Bart Kwan portray the diversity of Asian Americans in real life. These individuals not only defy the aforementioned stereotypes, but also demonstrate how diversity exists among Asian Americans, as the three individuals’ individual expressions on YouTube showcase diversity even among the three YouTubers. The research of Michael Omi and Howard Winant in Racial Formation in the United States (1994) is instrumental to the foundation of this research. This thesis will take away two points from their research in that first, racial perception is a vulnerable concept, and second, that the current day racial perception is a synthesis of past event. As such, what the analyses in this research amount to is a hint towards a potential for an even more of an increase in diversity of male Asian American character portrayals in American popular media – in which, the primary texts introduced in this analysis could have individually made significant contributions to.
