Study on Collision of Droplet on a Thin Cylindrical Body

초록/요약

We present the results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of drop impact on a fiber. Using high-speed videography, we analyze the dynamics of droplet collision with fibers. Based on the systematic experiments, we identify three outcomes of collision: capturing, single drop falling, and splitting. We demonstrate that the collision outcomes critically depend on the relative magnitudes of the inertial and capillary forces, the gravitational and capillary forces, and the ratio of the fiber thickness to the drop diameter, which is explained through a scale analysis of forces. We also examine the dynamics of the liquid retention on the fiber after the droplet impact, and develop models to predict the residual water mass. Our study can be extended to predicting the remaining droplet, critical problems in air filtration, water collection, and fiber coating.
