The Dual Identity of Second Generation Turkish Muslims in Germany : The Role of Islam in Identity Shaping

초록/요약

The increasingly multiplying migrants and their generations have been continuously shaping a new definition of European culture and society. This is particularly true to those second generations with Muslim identity. Despite the existing assimilation theory which has failed to address the current phenomenon in Europe, each nation-state shaped by their unique historical background and ethnicity requires individual attention to the puzzles raised with regards to the issue of dual identity of second generations. Focusing on second generation Turkish Muslims in Germany, also known as the ‘GerKish Generation,’ the purpose of this thesis is to disentangle their heterogeneous identity that is in contrast while they are at home and as a participant of their society. Throughout this study, evidence suggests that religious in identity is intensifying and is playing an intervening factor towards exclusion for these second generation Turkish Muslims in Germany. Therefore it is important to identify, in the context of a more secularized generational cohort, of the different strategies adopted for integration and how that interplays with the process of community cohesion.
