Not to be “Taken as a Fixture Along with the House” : The Centrality of Nelly Dean’s Character in the Resistant Energy of Wuthering Heights

에밀리 브론테(Emily Brontë)의 『폭풍의 언덕(Wuthering Heights)』은 많은 비평가들이 저항에 관한 소설로 읽어왔다. 본 논문 또한 넬리 딘 (Nelly Dean) 인물을 통해 저항에 접근하고자 한다. 기존의 연구들에서는 주로 그녀를 믿을 수 없는 서술자로 여겼다. 겉으로는 구질서에 순응하는 인물로 보이는 넬리 딘은 사실 저항의 기운을 지속 가능한 형태로 재생산하는 인물이라고 볼 수 있다. 소설의 결말에서 넬리 딘은 하인이지만 실질적 소유주로서의 지위를 행사할 수 있게 되고, 상징적 신분상승의 주인공이 된다. 사회적 신분은 그대로지만 상위 계층의 특권을 누리며, 그 시대 여성에 대한 이데올로기적, 실질적 억압에 구애 받지 않는 그녀는 가부장 질서에 삶으로서 대항하는 상징성을 가진다. 본 논문은 Alex Woloch의 character-space 와 character-system의 이론을 『폭풍의 언덕』에 적용시켜 넬리의 저항성을 뒷받침하고자 한다. 잠재적 주인공으로서의 가능성을 모든 인물이 가지고 있지만 제한된 내러티브 공간에서 그들은 왜곡되고 압축된다. 전체적인 인물 배치도에서 다른 인물들을 압축하고 왜곡함으로써 넬리가 주요인물로 자리잡게 되는 과정은 넬리의 가부장제 빅토리아 영국사회에 대한 저항이다. 그 뿐 아니라, 19세기 영국에서 실제로 발생하던 차티스트 운동 등을 통해 기존의 사회에 대해 반발하고 구질서에 반항하는 사회적 분위기가 형성되었는데, 이 저항성이 지속 가능한 형태로 투영되어 있는 인물로서의 넬리 딘을 주장하고자 한다.

This thesis claims that Emily Brontë plants the possibility of resistance through the character of Nelly Dean in Wuthering Heights. While many critics have argued that Nelly acquires agency through her narrative manipulation, I argue that they have overlooked the aspects of the character Nelly Dean and how her life is a resistance to the patriarchal structure. Using Alex Woloch’s concepts of “character-system” and “character-space,” this thesis analyzes how Nelly Dean acquires centrality as “the one” major character with a central position against “the many” other minor characters. This is not to merely study her characteristics but to recognize the formal transformation of social issues reflected into a system of characters by a coherent logic. Though Nelly Dean as a servant can be reduced to a minor character and a single function, it instead mirrors the liminality of Nelly Dean, such as her ambiguous attitude towards the social hierarchy. Through distorting and compressing other characters, Nelly Dean’s character-space acquires centrality in the limited narrative of the novel. Such an inverted order of character-system in fact reflects the revolutionary movements of nineteenth-century Britain: social reform movements that broke out successively to challenge the British patriarchal society. Reading Nelly Dean in terms of the character-space and the character-system shows that while Nelly enacts a less radical resistance than the other marginalized characters, her resistance can have a lasting effect.
