The film extrusion process is commonly used in polymer processing for manufacturing films, sheets and number of polymer products. However, optimizing the overall design of the process is a difficult task, due to the complexity of integrated approach with regard to problems of geometric effects, heat transfer effects, viscoelastic effects. These problems cannot be solved by controlling the process condition. It is mainly about designing the geometric factors of the entire process. Furthermore, while there are great number of researches on the each part of the film extrusion process, there are a few research been done on the entire part of the process. In order to determine the overall design of the extrusion process, the process was divided into two isolated systems; a single screw extruder and a coat hanger die. First process includes, ‘The optimal screw configuration’ and Taguchi method was used to determine the optimal screw geometry and processing conditions for the single screw extrusion process. Second process consists of Finite Element Method (FEM), where numerical simulation was implemented to optimize the geometric parameters of a coat hanger die including the manifold cross sectional area with different flow rates. Eventually, designation of the entire film extrusion process including the screw configuration and the die geometry was complete. This research allowed to fabricate a high quality of film products in convenient way.
