Extensive Reading and the English Section of the Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test: A Diary Study of a Korean High School Student

초록/요약
외국어로서 영어를 학습하는 과정에서 학생들은 많은 어휘와 해당 언어의 문법 및 구조를 이해하도록 요구된다. 한국의 영어교육과정은 성공적인 학습과정을 위한 많은 노력을 담고 있지만 여전히 많은 학생들은 입시위주의 교육 방식과 수학능력평가 외국어영역의 고득점을 위한 강의방식에 의해 영어학습에 대한 흥미와 재미를 잃어가고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 영어학습에 대한 의욕을 고취시키고자 하는 하나의 방편으로서 학생들의 외적 동기가 아닌 내적 동기를 자극하는 다독읽기(Extensive Reading)는 재미있고 쉬운 영어학습을 고무시키는 데 도움이 될 수 있을 것이라는 가정이 도출되었다. 이에 본 연구는 8주 동안 고등학교 2학년에 재학 중이며 교내에서 하위권에 해당하는 남학생을 실험 대상으로 선정하여 다독읽기 프로그램을 접하도록 한 실험연구의 방법을 택해 다독읽기가 하위권 학생의 영어 학습, 특히 수학능력평가 외국어 영역에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 8주 동안 대상 학생은 본인의 영어수준에 맞는 16권의 수준별 도서(Graded Readers)를 읽고 매 도서마다 독후감을 쓰도록 지도되었다. 8주 후, 어휘의 양은 늘었고 읽기 속도와 독해 능력도 향상 되었으며 2012년 11월에 실시된 모의고사의 외국어영역 성적은3등급으로 실험 전 보다 4등급이 향상되었다. 무엇보다도 실험 대상 학생은 다독 읽기를 통해 얻은 영어 읽기에 대한 자신감과 동기가 수학능력평가 외국어 영역을 다룰 때 많은 도움을 주었으며 시험에 대한 불안과 두려움도 상당히 줄어들었다는 의견을 피력했다. 본 실험의 결과는 현 영어교육과정의 학습방법 다양화와 효과적인 교육방식을 위한 고찰에 도움이 될 수 있을 것이며 영어 학습에 고충을 겪고 있는 많은 학습자들과 현직 교사 및 교재 개발자들에게 유의미한 연구가 될 것이다.

The process of learning a foreign language, especially English, demands students to have a variety of abilities such as vocabulary, language structure, and grammar. English education in Korea is systematic in accordance with what it takes to achieve successful language learning. Yet, in the process of learning English, many Korean students feel pressure to achieve good grades because the dominant reason for Korean high school students to study English is to enter a good university in Korea. Realistically it is natural to consider earning high marks from the English Section of the Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test as a significant factor to enter university. However, the problem is that a large number of students do not know an effective way to get high scores on the KSAT and do not seem to enjoy studying English itself. In such a situation, extensive reading may serve to encourage students to read English books without pressure. Extensive reading puts an emphasis on the importance of readers’ intrinsic pleasure of the reading itself, whereas the extrinsic variables of Korean educational system such as tests and grades may interfere with the reader’s intrinsic motivation about reading for pleasure. Consequently, an 8-week extensive reading individual case study was conducted with an 18-year-old high school student to assess how it can influence performance on the English section of the KSAT. During 8 weeks, a participant read 16 books according to his level and interest, keeping his reading journals. It was found that the volume of words is expanded, reading speed and comprehension is enhanced, and grades from mock tests are improved. The participant also expressed that he could overcome the fear to read books and solve questions from the English section of the KSAT and raise motivation to study English through the influence of extensive reading. These findings suggest that incorporating extensive reading into the existing English education system in Korea provides a viable mechanism with which to improve English language learning. In conclusion, adding extensive reading programs to the current English education system can affect the way students study English significantly.
